try connecting it to a external monitor.
if it works fine on external monitor then it's prolly the cable being loose.
(reseat it from the video card and system board, which would require you to take the laptop apart.)
but if it still doesn't work then it's the video card or systemboard.

if you are still under warranty just send it to dell/hp or whoever.

when do you see that screen, when you first turn it on, or when it gets past the windows is loading?

Is your screen normal at anytime during the startup?

Boot into safe mode (press F8 repeatedly when starting), and then set your video settings to the lowest. Perhaps the settings are set too high for the monitor. HTH

does altering the angle of the screen to the keypad change what you see on the screen?

Just an idea. Sometimes a few keystrokes can change video settings.

If it's just the start up screen then there isn't much to worry about.

Probably the start-up image has been corrupt.

IF it's something more serious then you could be looking at premature GPU failure. NVIDIA's stock recently dropped 30% because of a packaging defect in their GPUs.

Call hp and see if your model is in the affected range.

go into safe mode and uninstall your video card driver.
Do you know how to do this?

The extended batter probably had poor discharge capacity causing the system board to be underpowered. I have seen this before with laptops where people purchase offbrand power adapters or use the wrong battery/power supply. Newer laptops have GPU's that require lots of power, and if the battery can't supply the juice, things get pretty wiggy.
