Need tipping advice
Im having a new washer, dryer and overhead microwave being delivered today. They are also removing my old stuff. However, they are not installing it. I have another group of people coming tomorrow to hook it all up(Damn outsourcing!).
That being said, how much should I tip the guys delivering the stuff, and how much should I tip the guys installing the stuff? Opinions please.

It should all be included in your purchase price. Do clear objects that can get in the way and keep your pets away if any, also offer them a cold drink.

Based on your thinking, do you not tip servers because the price of the food is higher? Do you not tip your barber because you think the tip is included in the price?

With servers they get paid under minimum wage because tipping is customary and therefore the 'tip' is NOT included in their service wages. Just make it as easy on them as possible and offer them a drink, they will be thankful. I used to deliver lumber and windows back in college and an easy delivery and a drink were more than enough.

I like to tip what I can... Even if its not large. I believe what goes around comes around.
Say I give somebody a small tip ~$5 for doing something simple. Ill get a big tip the next day at work. Even if I only get a dollar back its totally worth it.

I only tip my barber because he uses sharp objects near my face.

Same for me with the "what comes around goes around". And the guys are busting their butts, probably in the heat too.
I ask service people like this if they want a cold drink and flip them a five each and tell them lunch on me. Not a great lunch but lunch none the less. The last time I moved I asked the guys if they would like some clothes. To my suprise they said "hell yes". I gave them jeans, sweaters, sneakers and shirts. All in good shape and some of it was really nice stuff. I think I made their day. Made me feel good too.

I wouldn't give them anything additional unless they were really friendly and/or helpful. They don't really work for tips and a lot of the time really aren't supposed to accept them anyways. I would say a 10 spot per person is more than sufficient if you're looking to be generous, but unless they go above and beyond the call of duty I wouldn't.

The custom of tipping comes for service that is over and beyond what is expected. It has since become customary for food and such. Maybe bell-hops in a hotel. But when someone is coming out to delivery items I wouldn't tip on them just doing their basic job. If they come in and jut plop it down, don't tip them. But if they come and put forth more effort than what you might expect, THEN I may tip.
Also, don't tip just to tip. Tip based on the actual service that you recieve. You don't OWE them a tip just because they step their foot in the door. They have to earn it. Same goes for food even. If it is a basic food service then I'll tip about 15%. But that is just a starting point. If I feel the service was particularly good then I'll tip more, or less for bad service. I would encourage poeple not to just tip to say you tipped and feel good about yourself. In regards to what goes around comes around. This takes care of itself. If you go around giving good above average service, then your tips will come around. If someone else goes around giving good service, then your tips will come around to them. But tipping bad service doesn't mean by any divine law that you will get a hefty tip tomorrow. Especially if you are giving out bad service. Earn that shit!

dont give the guys anythign for delivering the shit. thats like paying your mail man. give the guys who are setting it up anything between 10-20. depends on how deep u wanna go in your pockets. if its alot of work, id throw them each a 20 at least (assuming theres more than one guy thats coming to set it up)

I'll just offer them a cold beer and a cig or something...some might take tipping as an insult...

Here's a tip: Look both ways before crossing the street.
Seriously though, ask them if they'd like a drink to take with them and depending on thier attitude/work ethic will result in what monetary tip they receive. |

Delivery, maybe $5 or $10 if you're generous. The installation of the washer and dryer is easy, but the real work is when they install the hanging microwave. I'd say at least $10 for the installs. I use to do it when I worked for an appliance company.
