The Hatchback Chunkiness of the M2

M2 is built to be a nimble car. Dynamically it is many would agree. But in the shape department, look more closely, it is not.

In fact M2/2er is a bit chunky viewed from the side or even the front. That you don't have to put it next to some ground up sports car to notice. A normal Audi A5 will instantly make M2 look tall and, more critically, FAT. And You may or may not realize, M4, its longer wheel base big brother, is like 5% lower, or, to be more accurate, slimmer. M4 has a bigger wheel-fender gap and is still able to sit lower than M2.

You can fix the ride height with coilover or shorter spring, but it would have a little bit the look of a lowered hatchback. I used to call my M2 the X2M in its stock form and all of my friends cannot agree more. What 2er really needs is a 5% vertical shrinkage.

Agree! When I park my M2 next to a cayman or a vette, it looks like a 4x4. Sportscar my ass.

Taller vehicle, more glass, better outside visibility.

I agree. I definitely have excessive headroom, and found the car to be quite tall when I first picked it up. The rear quarter window is quite large too. I guess the whole "greenhouse" is bulbous.

But I did want a 2+2 and I think that's a side effect of the functionality of it. Though I was ready to get rid of my 4 door for it, I wasn't ready to get rid of a back seat. Today I'm ready to remove the backseat though haha.

I love the look of the M2 and I have been looking a few cars lately. M4CS, C63S, and Gulia. All beautiful cars in their own right. However, I appreciate the taller roofline of the M2. I'm not crunched down when wearing a helmet, and isn't that what BMW had in mind when they designed the car, the track?

At the track this weekend, the M2 that was on the track was clearly the fastest car out there. I'm finally ready to get my car on the track.

Get out there and enjoy the car, whether you believe it's a sports car or not.

With M2, actually it's the body part that is chunky. Just look at that big and tall door. Simply out of the place.

And no, all BMW M are designed for road and street, with some degree of trackability. Any wear or malfunction out of track use instantly voids your warranty because they're not the intended use of the product.

BTW helmet is definitely not considered in their design. Plus it doesn't take M2 tall to comfortably wear a helmet.

Yeah the m2 is definitely too tall, but it is based on the 2 series production car which needs to attend to the consumer needs. So taller customers, bigger customers etc.

M models also are more so designed for track vs. pure street use hence the extra thought on the sump baffling and sump pump to push oil back to the front of the pan. Every car even porsche's GT models have their warranties voided when used on the track because of the increased wear that is put on components and manufactures don't want to shell out huge sums of money on a car that already is in low demand and has low profit margins to fix issues. So warranty should not be a factor in determining "trackability" of a car.....

I do agree the M2 should have a more sleek and sporty look, but most bmw's have a blocky nature so it's hard to deviate from the overall bmw Phenotype.

M2 doesn't have to be sports car sleek, but being fatter than the Audi A5 or a Lexus IS doesn't sound right...

Not all BMW is fat, for example M4 is slim. It's only appropriate for M2 to be the same if not slightly slimmer to match its shorter wheel base.

I actually love the dimension of the F87 M2...including the height as it allows me and passengers to get in and out fairly easily. The dimension is actually fairly similar to a E46 except being much wider.

I dislike being in the M4 because its too low for daily and too long and wide to manoeuvre well on tight roads.

I don't mind the wide and low nature, just how tall it is (like others have been saying). I don't have too much of an issue with height seeing that my FRS was way lower.

"Hatchback Chunkiness of the M2" Thread?
You have to be kidding me.

I guess we have exhausted all the complaints about the car and we had to eventually get to "Hatchback Chunkiness"

When I see these complaints - I always come up with the same question:

"Did you test drive it" or in this case SeanWRT did you buy the car sight unseen or blindfolded?

To all the complainers: - ***Trade the car!***

Hatchback Chunkiness thread - smh.

Hey Tranck, there're many reasons I bought this car and did a little more to it than the most. To save time, I love the car as is and still have strong passion for it.

But that doesn't mean it's perfect in every aspect. And certainly doesn't mean I won't be talking about its imperfections. So I'm trying to hear everyone's opinion on this dimension subject.

Well, we have enough OMG I love this car thread don't we?

Vertical shrinking will make it look like a Camaro....which is absolutely hideous.

Really man? You're comparing the M2 to the X2?

Here's a few pictures of the X2 just to remind you what that shit looks like

I see no similarities at all...

When I got the car in 2016, we didn't know what real X2 would look like.

Couldn't disagree more. I love the stubby and sawed-off-shot-gun look of the M2. It is more purposeful and muscular looking. Design follows function here, and the packaging wizards at BMW did a fantastic job making the 2-series relatively roomy inside. It gives up little in interior space relative to how much smaller it is compared to the 4-series (which can get away with sleeker proportions because it is a much bigger car). If you change the height of the M2, you will give up not only the practicality, but also what makes it unique!

Would prefer a less bulbous roofline. That was my initial reaction seeing 2 series spy photos and the same is true on the M version.

Everywhere I go heads turn! The other day an M3 was up my rear only to get up on my passenger side to say the M2 look wicked lol The car looks great its fat and chunky and thick and jacked it looks better than 4 door M3 and long M4 just my opinion.

Oh, and that MPE sound open flaps in sport mode 6 MT

I'm sure we can all agree that the e46 M3 has the ideal proportions.
F87 is whopping 1.5 inches taller. OMG!

If I wanted a low, cramped sports car I would have bought a Corvette. I wanted a fun to drive daily driver.
