I finally found a car that I like (2015 year), but its a lemon buyback at auction....which i dont mind especially if its sold with discount. The problem is that it says for some reason it has no title and in comments sections it says title is not required. Its there something I dont know about Buybacks? Why is title not required and how am I supposed to register it then?

I am not against the idea of going to the casino and possibly blowing a lot of money if the person can afford to lose.

I know of no way to register the vehicle for a tag without a title.

I'm not buying it, I've never seen "No Title Required" yet. Its for sale by original dealership who bought it back. I am just curious what happened to the title, maybe there is a special way to register buybacks or something

If you buy it as a rebuilder you won't get the title
It should be on file with the DMV
In California you'd go through smog , brake/lamp then DMV will perform VIN verification and issue a rebuilt/salvage title

Be aware that if you later want to resell the vehicle, it will have a very reduced value as a result of the salvage title.

But it's not salvage, it's just a lemon law buyback in like new condition and I am guessing still under factory warranty

This seems like a terrible idea to save a few thousand bucks but what do I know....IMO you should either pay market value for a regular clean title car or buy a different car that's less expensive.

If being sold by the dealer he should be able to show you everything done to the car that made it a lemon. I would buy a lemon depending on what the problem was, the price, and how difficult it would be to register it.

I would be very surprised to hear it is under warranty.

I would want to know why it was lemon lawed and what was done for it. It could be that there was a continuing problem and the final solution was complete replacement of the bad part(s) but too late for the owner who demanded lemon law treatment. In that case, it might be a good idea if the discount reflects the status.

But if you cannot identify the reason for the buyback, and what was done if anything to fix it, then I would be hesitant unless the discount was huge.

Also. some manufacturers pull the OEM warranty once a car is lemon lawed. So I would check and make sure that you will have remaining OEM warranty.

Agree. Also think that with any of these strange titles that stay with the car forever the only likely way to come out ahead is to keep the car a long time. Buy a "lemon" or salvage title, keep the car a couple of years and the new owner will expect close enough to the same discount you got that I wouldn't bother.

Buy a 2015 at a big enough discount and keep it 7-10 years and likely at this point it won't matter much as it won't have much value either way, plus you can show when the issues happened and that it is no longer a problem.

Some people are just terrified of cars, lemon law buyback is definitely not the worst idea if the price is right. BUT I don't believe the dealership that issued the buyback is *required* to fix the car before reselling. So the vehicle may have an issue.

But about the title, maybe it can be held electronically in your state? I think I bought a car in Wisconsin from a dealership and the title was in the DMV data base.... I can’t quite remember it was many many years ago. I’d want some proof before I bought it though. Good luck!

It's an auction car, I don't know the details or price. Can probably find out why it's lemon and warranty, but I stopped at title issue.

As far as getting a clean title car..... Yeah this one could be clean too, it's just buyback. Its in like new condition and has options that I want, if I could buy it cheaper that would be nice. I have no issues with that. I've been looking for one for over 6 months now. It's not a matter of affording "clean title" or not

You're putting yourself through a lot of undue heartache for little to no gain in the long run. You won't think about that 5k saved years from now.

Yes, if there is no title of course its a no. I just wish there was a title branded or not. Sick of looking for a car to buy. I have 2 more inches and my son will outgrow his car seat and next one will be more pain for 2-series

It is my understanding that manufacturers send their lemon cars to auction houses. After that, and several ownership changes, the title becomes a "clean title" although it shouldn't be one.

If you can do the due diligence, then it might make sense. But I am very nervous about the transaction.

My grandmother had her chevy cruze bought back buy the dealership as a lemon because of the "plastic smell." She went to buy another chevy car after that and during the test drive said " this one smells just as bad!. Regardless, the first car was sold as a lemon. BMW bught back my 330e as a quasi lemon. I had constant problems with the battery pack. The last time, which was after I had already decided to demand that they buy it back, they replaced everything.

So the person who ended up buying my old 330e may have a good car. But, of course, maybe not.

I agree with the comment that there is a sucker born every day. A $2K of $3K discount for a lemon lawed car is outrageously too much money.

Dont think its a sucker though. Most likely that person knows exactly how to get title for it and knows that there is nothing wrong with car. Its a dealer auction after all.
