Hello all

I may be in a position to look for a new ride soon. I don't commute to work but this would be my only car and it would be winter driven (occassionally)

Looking for opinions on which of the following would bring the most smiles per mile (which is really my only criteria).

R8 V10 (1st gen or second gen, manual 2010 and up or Stronic 2014 and up)
F type R Coupe 2016 and up
991.1 GTS or 981 GT4
2015-2016 Vantage GT manual

pretty much all priced similar except for the R8 and 991.1 GTS, which are at another level, I can swing it, but do wonder if the extra cost is worth it.

As you can tell from the list, I value normal aspiration.
I also like low end torque.
I like smaller cars with good visibility.

I have always been a manual guy, but the zf8 in my m240i is pretty good, and as I mature I am thinking a really good paddle set up might actually be my preference

I've had 2 981 Cayman S's so I've already done the porsche thing.
I have always just loved the vantage looks, but past test drives have been disappointing in terms of driving dynamics

I have never driven an R8 but sat in my friend's v10 manual

I am leaning towards the ftype R, the last one I drove made me smile and giggle like a school girl

I am not a track guy so it's really about enjoying a car as a road car on pleasure drives

R8 V10 all day. I'm also biased, I've wanted an R8 since they dropped in 08. The interior on them got a big upgrade in 2012 so if you're going to look try to find ones from 12' up

As a daily i cannot go past the Porsche, just cannot. The rest are too showy and too much hassle.

Out of his selection, this probably stands out the most in appearance. That said, I can't imagine having any one of these vehicles as my "only car" regardless if it's in a snowy area or not. At least get a Yaris or something on the side if you can afford a $100K+ sports car.

I would agree. At least have like an older car or something that you can tote around in. Idk if I'd want to take my R8 to the grocery store

991.1 GT3. 10 year 120k engine warranty. Drive one and there will be no other choice if you can afford it. It’s absolute perfection.

I live downtown with one parking spot

Carbon, even just the cosmetic kind, should hold up to a shopping cart. Isn't it Koenigsegg that says they can crash test their cars multiple times? Maybe it's McLaren.

In college a friend left town for the holidays and left us his Jeep. We promptly went to Target, WalMart, K Mart and the local groceries stores to find out who had the most stable shopping carts. We'd pull up behind an empty one (we tried really hard to convince a room mate to ride in them with a bike helmet on) and would accelerate until they'd start to gyrate.

Target's would do about 55mph before getting the death wobble. WalMarts were the worst. We tried to launch them over a curb, true success was if the front wheels sheared off. I'm sure the poor folks that had to round up carts wondered what the hell happened.

We also drove home the final few blocks entirely in our neighbors yards. My poor buddy probably never figured out why all of our neighbors hated him when he got back from holiday.

R8 all day long...I have a 2014 V10 and love the shriek of the V10. The S-tronic in sport mode is awesome. Has the right amount of aggressive shifting and lightning quick shifts. I used to be a manual guy and finally decided to move to the dark side of dual clutches and don't regret it one bit.

R8 has a very civilized driving character when you are not exploring its true potential so it does not beat you to death when you just want to cruise along quietly.

R8 gets a lot of attention so be prepared for that.

How long are you planning on keeping it? Out of this list, I would take the Gen1 R8 V10 with the gated manual. I don't think those will depreciate much lower than they are now, not without significant mileage at least. The number of V10 & V12 manual cars >2010 can be counted on a single hand..

I am trying not to let the money factor in too much here but it's a legit point

GT4 will probably hold the best value... but the used R8 is a good buy right now and just has more wow factor, although I don't think you'll find a better handling car the the GT4.

I'd get one with the regular sport seats though in the GT4, the carbon buckets look amazing, but I wouldn't like driving around town in them much.

The Vantage will drop in value like a lead balloon

I'd bet the manual R8 will appreciate. They seem mildly underpriced right now compared to other cars that have killed off the manual, like the Gallardos. I'd think the 981 GT4 will take a minor hit when the 718 GT4 arrives.

I would agree on appreciation with a gated 6spd R8. The dogtronic boxes of the early gen are no good.

Even if it doesn't appreciate... If you find one with low miles you can probably enjoy it for a couple years for just the maintenance/insurance costs then sell it for close to what you paid. They're just such a good value right now...Like if I had the $$ for one there would be one in my driveway.

tough call. it would be between the GT4 and the R8 v10 for me. Wouldn't bother with a non-GT 2/3/4 porsche.

If you are going to track.. then GT4. If its primarily a street car then R8. I've heard the R8 is a bit too soft though (steering/suspension) compared to the gallardos/GT3s

Maybe consider a 5th gen viper ? I drove one a few years ago and was very impressed with it.
