Guess how much it cost to repair?

Hi,
A few weeks back, my wife parked our X3M40i on top of a wall!
Don’t ask how?
It totally cleared the wall - with no damage to the front bumper and it ended up resting on the front sills.
To extract the car - we jacked it up so that front wheels were level with height of wall, put blocks under them - carefully reversed onto the wall.
We then built a ramp and drove the car backwards down to the road level.
I then drove car round the block and it drove perfectly.
We then washed car and there were absolutely no scratches or marks on the front bumper or wings.
There was small visible damage to the plastic sill covers - where they had been resting in top of the wall.
Informed insurance company about the accident - in case we needed to make a claim.
They suggested we took it to the local dealer for them to inspect and prepare a quote for repair - if required.
Took it there and they put car on ramp and we thoroughly inspected it.
They then prepared a quote for what was required.
What do you reckon?

Yikes! I hope she lost driving privileges for at least a month

Without knowing the actual damage, and really anything about repairing BMWs, I'm guessing $8000?

Wow, pretty remarkable that there wasn't more exterior damage.

Hi,
I showed the pictures to the sales guy in the dealer and he told me to remind my wife that her car is not designed to fly!
Total bill for repair (thankfully fully covered by our comprehensive insurance) was actually $27,200!
Included new front wheels and tyres, wheel bearings (due to shock of impact), sills were damaged underneath the plastic covers - due to hard impact when it landed!, wheel hubs, trim pieces, sill covers, etc. etc.
21” Wheels were $2382 each and tyres were $840 each according to the estimate!
We just paid our insurance excess of $140!
Total repair bill was around a 1/3rd price of the car! - which was only 3 months old at time of the accident.
Cheers
Steve

Well, factor in the cost of divorcing her, then you have to give her half, depending on your job and what you have in the bank, way more then you would want it to be....

Sorry about the incident. Hope your wife is OK and leant a lesson. I am guessing she mistook the gas pedal as brake All wheel drive is amazing that it can take you to places where you would not normally think you can, including clearing a wall.

I am surprised that they could charge you more than $2300 per rim (so it's over $9000 for whole set), and $840 per tire They must have known that insurance would pay whatever they asked. These prices are more than double what you pay OEM parts at dealers in US.

The reason why the premiums are so high, is that they charge way to much for parts when doing insurance work. :-(

I'm still waiting for the price of two new doors and plastic sill cover ..

Xmas has come early for that dealership. That costing is absolutely insane!

More importantly, your wife was unharmed and you are little out of pocket for such an expensive repair

Am I missing a part of this story? Not sure whether to feel good or bad that the estimate came out to 27K. I mean if this was a Porsche I would totally understand...

Hmm. Maybe you can choose something from used parts and the price will not be so high I recommend this used BMW parts website: https://rrr.lt/en/cars-list/bmw

I know the OP doesn't want us to ask how it happened but the repair bill doesn't nearly surprise me as much as how she managed to do that on what appears to be a low/moderate speed, wide residential road.

The trouble though is we are indirectly paying for these greedy prices through high insurance costs..

Unless she was going 20 mph into the curb, how could the wheel bearings and hubs be damaged? The car is built for mild offroading. That dealership took the whole staff out to dinner that night.

Steve, glad that no one was injured. I'm not surprised by the repair cost since you live in Abu Dhabi. Was surprised that there was apparently no frame damage from the impact when the X3 landed abruptly on the concrete wall.

Are they replacing the sills? That’s quite structural and probably needs a jig to retain chassis alignment. I’ve seen some very dubious driving in Dubai, it seems AD is no different. I doubt it’s possible to recreate that sequence missing the trees and frontal damage to the car. Quite an achievement!

Surprised a repair bill 1/3 of the car's actual cost didn't result in a total. I would guess that's close to 50% of the depreciated value, which typically triggers a total.
