Which vehicles did you cross shop?
Tried the search function, didn't see a thread that was relevant to this particular question...
So which vehicles did you cross shop before deciding on the G05 X5? I am currently considering the X5 50i, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, Mercedes Benz E63S Wagon and MB G550. The G-Wagon is currently running a year and a half, to two years out, that includes being on a waiting list for an allocation to custom order (that is sort of making the decision for me on that one, not wanting to wait that long). What else did everyone consider?

GLE, GLC, F Pace (some of these were just for fun so I could drive then) RR sport, Velar. RR full sized, Q7/8, X5M (out going), M5 and too many others I don't recall Cayenne S, Macan Turbo etc

This has been brought up before but being a long time 911 owner I was serious about the Cayenne S/Turbo, Audi Q8, (RR only because it had a V8.). I did look at another A8 and 750i but realistically no luxury car has the trunk space I need for family road trips.

Cross shopped 2019 Cayenne Base against the G05 xDrive50i M Sport to replace a 2016 Cayenne Base late last year. Both came out pretty even price-wise with options and BMW dealer discounting substantially more. Went with the Cayenne because I already have the F15 and wanted the opportunity to consider the G05 M50i when it's time to replace the F15 in a couple months. If the M50i had been out then, I probably would have picked it over the Cayenne. Can't sneeze at a 200hp difference. I'll probably cross shop the Q8, AMG CLS 53 and RR Sport HSE against the M50i in August, with a strong inclination towards the BMW simply due to its engine. This is of course assuming that the M50i is priced similarly (within $3-4k) to the xDrive50i. That would make it a true performance bargain.

We did EVERY mid & full size SUV/SAV available in the PHX area at the end of 2018 into early 2019... Took a few months but after all the driving, talking and research BMW took our money and we bought 2019 X3 and X5..... No regrets or disappointment so far..
Reasoning was overall comfort, quality, and fun factor. For the wife looks was number one and ease of infotainment system.

Cross shopped the GLE 450 AMG, the Cayenne, Macan, Audi SQ5, and the F Pace SVR. My X5 build was just over $85K so nearly every option.
1. GLE450- Didn't like the leather seat feel; too slow; doesn't handle as well as the X5; cheap plastics in the cabin 2. Cayenne- Need to get the S to measure up to the 40i's speed; gets annoyingly pricey really quickly with options that should really be standard/cheaper; the center console just blanks out the options you didn't buy/couldn't afford but, under direct sunlight, you can see the writing for them through the blacked out part. No quicker way to ruin a perfectly sunny day out with your brand new car than to be reminded of all the things you couldn't put on it. 3. Macan - Read some of the above for the Cayenne + too small inside 4. SQ5 - despite the "S" trim, still only as fast as the 40i; smaller; inside has very little character; it's very solidly built but it just feels way too clinical; seats are comfy though. 5. F Pace SVR - obviously blows everything out of the water with performance; small inside; biggest problem here was that, while the performance was unmistakable, the vehicle was a $90K sticker with almost everything a $45K car would have, aside from new seats - just not worth the money unless all you want is performance but then, at that point, just get a 1-2 year old 911. |

RR Sport - Too boxy looking. I don't remember specs exactly be I believe their v8 was slower 0-60 than the X5 i6. Did feel like I got anything for the extra $$.
Q8 - Loved the front 1/2. I think the interior was a little higher end. Back didn't have enough room for my dog's kennel. More like a fat station wagon. Plus was the same price of the X5 v8 but with the features of the X5 i6. Q7 - Needs a refresh. Especially after seeing the Q8. Like comparing a F15 to a G05. Lexus - Don't remember, fell asleep. lol... Porsche Suv, not a fan of the front or interior.

Porsche Cayenne, Maserati Levante, Tesla Model X. Didn't consider any others. I drove Mercedes for over 20 years, and wanted something different. Porsche was overpriced and the lead time was way too long for my needs, the Levante is a traveling Maserati logo (I counted no less than 14 Maserati logos on the car before I stopped counting). "Look at me, I'm a Masa-fucking-rati." When I looked at the Model X, I felt the interior looked like a NYC subway car, and the car itself is ugly. As beautiful as the Model S is, they really screwed up the design of the X.
Coming from a Tesla Model S, I wanted something with tech. My X5 actually has more tech features than my Tesla. The X5 had the best mix of tech, luxury, looks and drives great. And, bonus - the price was amazing. I paid $30,000 less for my X5 than the Model X would have cost me. And that's with almost every option in my X5. |

Cayenne S, Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, and GMC Sierra Denali.
I need towing capacity, so I looked at the Escalade and Yukon Denali, but they were the last model year before an update, and the lease prices were really high for what I was getting, and the dealer really screwed up an easy deal for me to move into a second Escalade in a row. Had my wife and child at the dealership and he thought it was a good time to play games on making me wait forever. I called ahead to have the deal ready and was promised it was, scheduled a time to come in sign, and leave, and when he leaves to talk to the manager, we wait 15 minutes without so much as the dealer asking how we were doing. I walk into the managers office, they're looking something up, I grab the key to my old car and walk out. I liked the new Sierra Denali, but I just couldn't bring myself to daily drive a pickup truck even if it was nice inside. When I decided I can borrow or rent a tow vehicle for the 3-4 times year I take my boat out of the water, I looked at sportier SUVs that would be way more fun. The Cayenne S and Range Rover Sport were substantially more money to get even close to similar performance and options to my X5 50i, so it really was a no brainer and I didn't even test drive them after I spec'd them out online. Q8 doesn't even have a V8 option, Mercedes wasn't out with the new GLE yet, and it didn't compare in performance unless I got a GLE 63. And I've owned one of every single German brand (aside from Maybach), I kinda was ready for another BMW. Last edited by Captain Gumbo; 05-14-2019 at 08:54 AM.. |

'20 GLE 450, '19 Q7 3.0t - Q7 just felt sluggish and dated. GLE better than the Q7 I thought, but still was lacking compared to the X5. Sales guy admitted he was a bit frightened when I attempted to corner it the way I did with the X5 - he thought it might roll over.

I planned on replacing my Macan with another Macan, but very limited updates would mean driving essentially the same vehicle. I like new/improved...and the electric conversion was not an option for me.
Looked/read extensively, and narrowed to three: Cayenne - my first choice if there wasn't a $12-14K+ premium. I think it's best looking, best handling over-priced mid-size SUV. X5 40i - Closest to the Cayenne in performance. Great features, and build quality approaching the Porsche. (Magna issue excluded). Same great ZF 8-spd. as Cayenne...good as the PDK I hear. Love the ambient lighting. MB GLC43 AMG - On paper, seamed like a strong contender. Quick, but wasn't (for me) a contender. Ordered Phytonic Blue/Ivory White 40i last week. My 6th Bimmer, 1st "X". I think I made a good choice, but I'll miss the sound from those quad exhausts on my Macan. My friends, though, will appreciate the extra room. |

When asked, we dont tell sales person what other cars we are looking at. plus a good sales person will try to sell me their car and not try to compare theirs to others I usually dress like a bum when looking at cars, if they treat me any different than a normal customer i walk out. |

After looking at the competition it came down to a glc amg63 vs the x5-50i. Some days i kinda wish i went with the 63 since it just wanted to go like hell but in the end the car just was not polished enough compared to the x5.

I dont doubt that at all. Sales people should never judge, but unfortunately most higher end dealership, especially ones in upscale location, dont understand that concept. We've been treated like crap, but also treated like royalty before

I expect very little of dealers these days. It's why I generally negotiate a deal over the phone or email first if I can. And now I mostly use a lease broker who I went to high school with to get me a deal. I love cars, hate the sales process. The only dealership I've dealt with in recent years that left a good impression was Audi of Fort Lauderdale, where we bought my wife's car.
