The OFFICIAL "Cord Cutters" Thread
So I've been a very long time and loyal DirecTV subscriber. 20yrs!
I currently have they're latest and greatest Whole Home DVR package and a beefy Entertainment Pkg to boot. And count em, 6 DVR remote minis for various rooms. Cost? Too foking much! Each mini is $6 each. So naturally finding a viable alternative is appealing for me. I absolutely must have the ability to record in HD. What I want to know from those of you who have already and came from a cable or satellite DVR setup. What are you now using? I also have a Firestick and most of my TVs are Smart. I watched videos and read positive reviews for the TABLO QUAD. https://www.tablotv.com/products/tablo-quad-ota-dvr/ Any experiencewith this or other great solutions?

I am getting to really hate DirectTV. We've had it for a year, and it is far inferior to the Uverse we had, though the DirectTV is far cheaper. I would love to see what others think is a good alternative.

We've been using PSVue on the updated Firestick 4k and we love it. Been about a year now. We tried Sling and Hulu and DTVNow and I think one other but between the menu UI, available channels, and DVR features we stuck with PSVue.

I have a bit of a hybrid. Spectrum Internet (100MBPs) and TV but only have cable boxes on a couple of TVs (One with DVR) - the rest have ROKU streaming stick. We stream the Spectrum app through ROKU so we have the same channel lineup but also have Amazon Prime and Netflix available plus all the free ROKU channels.
I’d like to ditch the Spectrum cable and go to just internet with streaming services, but I’m not seeing both good reliability and reasonable pricing from the same provider/app just yet. Like the OP, I’m open to other ideas and experiences. |

We just dropped DirecTV after many years. It was costing us $160/mo and we barely watch TV. Wifey watches "The Voice" and we sometimes watch a series on PBS. Otherwise I watch baseball on MLB.TV using my Apple TV players. We have 3, one for each TV in the house. After we dropped DirecTV I had our cable company (who provides our internet) add the very basic local station package. I bought a couple of cheap tuner boxes at Best Buy. They worked ok, but they're a bit of pain to use and record off. So we tried the basic YouTube TV package for a few bucks more and it's way better and has cloud based recording. That's working out pretty well so far. And it saves us $110/mo over DirecTV.
I know that doesn't answer your question fully. But that's what worked for us.

Currently using YouTubeTV for primary streaming. For the televisions that don't have built-in YouTubeTV capability we're using Roku. Get Amazon Prime TV for being an Amazon Prime member and free Netflix for having T-Mobile. For all other services like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax we free ride off my MIL. Internet and YouTubeTV service we're all in at $90/month (this factors in the recent YouTubeTV bogus price hike)

What really ticks me off is that now DirecTV is offering me a full boat package for $35/mo for a year. WTF? If they weren't charging me $160/mo for a middle package, I may not have dumped them. Is that the way they want to play this? I just keep threatening to dump them and I get cheap packages?

We're about to give it a try. Between HULU, Amazon Fire sticks and HBONow/Showtime app, I think we've got the bases pretty well covered. We'll see.

We ditched dtv about 8 years ago. Currently just have Netflix and prime. Tried psvue for a while but we just don’t care about tv anymore.
I miss live races but can easily catch them on YouTube. |

Again... My Biggest concern is the ability to record Live TV or shows in my absence. Finding Streaming TV is not a prob. I have found a source that streams damn near every channel on earth for a reasonable monthly fee.
This device has my attention: Any experience with it?

If recording live TV is a concern, but you can find a streaming source, I have to ask - what’s the difference? Are you just after local stuff that you can’t find on the internet? Seems like Hulu gets that covered for the most part.
I haven’t had any type of cable / SAT since I sold a house five years ago. Granted I live in a hole and have no idea what’s going on in the world. What year is it? |

YouTube TV has the MLB channel, but I think you're stuck watching whichever game they're showing at the time, right? I mean, it isn't like an MLB subscription where you can watch every game.
