New pads already?

So the other day, my idiot light went on and told me I need new rear pads. I'm not used to replacing rear pads on a car before the front ones, but my last car (Ford) was like this too (had to do with the stability control/torque vectoring system), so whatevs. I took a look, and the rears pads still have some meat on them, maybe 3/16 - 1/4 left. Looked at the front, and they don't look far behind.

But my BMW only has 27,000 miles on it – seems really soon to me, is this normal for an F31 X-drive?

Edit- I was just thinking, that all my previous cars were manual shift, and this is my first automatic basically, so obviously don't really have the benefit of engine braking. Could it make that much difference?

Normal? No. But not unheard of.

I'll take the wheels off and look at the inner pads then. I know brakes aren't part of the service package on '17s and later, but should a sticking caliper be a warranty item?

IMO a sticking caliper and/or pad is a workmanship flaw, so it should be covered. At your 27k they might get away with calling it normal wear, but not at my 11k.

Just to be clear. Was the alert on the ID screen which is (at best) as estimate based supposedly on driving style or the alert on your dash which is the brake pad sensor having been triggered? I had my I-Drive rear pad alert at about 31,000. Dealer looked at it and reset with a different value. I'm currently at 111K miles on original rotors and pads. Lot of highway miles and I drive like am "old man"! Hell, I am an Old Man!!

First I got the "orange" alert for a while, based on distance and what not. Then I let that go for a coulpe weeks and eventually got the "red" alert the other day, that said "drive cautiously" or whatever.

I do not drive like an old man, and mileage is mixed highway/suburban streets.

If the sensor's been tripped it can't be reset, ever. It has to be replaced.
