Winter Setup sizing
Getting started in figuring out what I want for a winter setup. I was at BMW dealership today and they didn't have a lot of info but expect more details by early September. They are suggesting 19" square and that set is around $4,500 + tax and 20" square is $5,500 plus tax. They had options for the X7 for 21" staggered at $7,000. I headed over to my tire and rim guys and asked for their reco and they suggested 20" square or staggered if I wanted to go down that way.
I had the 20" staggered setup on the F15 and I liked the look. My concern is I have the 22" 742M for the Summer and obviously love that look very much. The option I'm considering is the 20" staggered setup Rims - 20x9 front and 20x10.5 rear (Replika R233 in gloss black) Tires - 275/45/20 & 305/40/20 (Michelin Pilot Alpine 5 SUV) One photo is the Gunmetal but he indicated he could get the gloss black. The R233 seem similar looking to the 742M. What are you guys looking to do? Last edited by X54TH; 08-12-2019 at 09:08 AM.. |

For myself, I am going for 20"x9.5"' square setup for the winter — aftermarket black rims with spacers to basically get stock positions. Tires will be Blizzak DM-V2 275/45R20.

I'm also starting to look for options. Think I've landed on replica 22" 742M staggered setup (same as summer setup). I have an M50i on order and just love the meaty look way too much. Ive had a staggered winter setup on my 335i for years and never had a problem. The rears will wear out a lot faster, but the fronts will last for multiple seasons, so I feel like things even out. I don't think there's a real winter performance concern w the staggered setup... really a question of wear and tear + cost.

I saw a couple of 22" replicas of the 742M on eBay in bicolour and gray. My concern with the bicolour is the finish against the winter salt and I really wanted gloss black but maybe gray is the way to go if I reconsider the 22". My tire shop has a real challenge with 22" tire options. So far in the 742M replica options I found: 22" bicolour 22" gray 20" gloss black 20" gunmetal Not sure if anyone found a 21" 742M replica? Now I'm questioning the look of the 20" staggered. Here are the pics of the F15 20" staggered.

There is a 21" 742M replica option:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/21-NEW-STAGG...Rch29n&vxp=mtr ... but there are no winter options for a staggered 21" setup (that I can find). 22" have a staggered winter option: Pirelli Scorpion Winter

You can apply an anti corrosion spray to the wheels annually, and that should protect them (same stuff you spray on metal boat parts that operate in salt water environments).

There is another lengthy tread on this as well: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1552450
I stuck with square 20s. The Michelin pilot alpin 5 suv are a great choice of tires!

Hello.just got my G05 , with 21 “ tires. I have the M Sport package so , M brakes.
Looking to buy winter kit be thought 19” would be better.Dealer says the 19” will work with M sport brake but I have read that it would have to be minimum 20. Any advice , suggestions ? Thanks |

For Canadian X5 there is a TPMS this year in my OEM 22”. I guess I need to buy new sensors for my winter wheels too and get the dealer to program them.
I will get 275/45R20 Michelin but should I get 20x9.5 et35 square or with 20x10.5 et40 rears for the same cost? 10.5 should be ok for 275 tires and I know I can’t swap front to back but it might look better as for fitting. Would the 9.5” et35 be too inside the fender on the rear? Hum... |

I'm going 275/45/20 and 305/40/20. It's same as the the setup I had on the F15 and I liked the look of the wider profile in the back.

performance tire question
Are the performance tires that come with 21" rims summer tires that harden in winter temperatures, or are they OK to use in winter but with bad traction in snow?
I would much prefer the 21" rims over 20", but don't want to deal with the headache of having separate winter tires. |

Looking at the specs for the 21" wheels on the X5 M50i, I noticed the rears are 10.0" rather than 10.5" as on many other staggered set ups....below copied from BMW pricing guide.
21" M Y-spoke bi-color wheels, style 741M with performance run-flat tires Front: 21x9.5, 275/40 R21 Rear: 21x10.0, 315/35 R21 I researched Tire Rack and found the Vredestein Quatrac Pro - Grand Touring All-Season size 275/40R21 which carries the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF). It is a non-run flat. Specs from Tire Rack site: UTQG 400 A A MAX LOAD 2,149 lbs Max. Inflation Pressure 51psi Tread Depth.10/32" Tire Weight 34 lbs Rim Width Range 9-11" Meas. Rim Width 9.5" Tread Width 9.7" Overall Diam 29.7" Also on the Tire Rack site: Note: While non-winter tires featuring the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF) provide additional longitudinal snow traction beyond what all-season (M+S) tires not bearing the symbol can deliver, they do not match the capability of a true winter tire in all adverse weather conditions. The rim width for this tire shows 9"-11" so I am considering running 275/40 R21 all the way around with the factory 21" 741M rims. It appears to be a good tire from the reviews but I am not an expert and would appreciate any feedback. |

Could be a typo but it is coming from the last page of the 2020 BMW pricing guide attached. It is shown as code 1XN for the 40i and 50i and is shown as code ZXN on the M50i. In both cases, the rear is shown as 21X10.0.
There is another 21" Y spoke, code 1XD, available on the 40i and 50i only, which shows as 21X10.5 but it doesn't have the M in front of it. The M Y spoke code ZXN is the only 21" shown as available on the M50i. Text copied from the guide: 21" M Y-spoke bi-color wheels, style 741M with performance run-flat tires Front: 21x9.5, 275/40 R21 Rear: 21x10.0, 315/35 R21 $950 Code: ZXN Style: 741M ZXN will add 840 to the order I thought this was strange as well. Can anyone verify if this is a typo? If it is a typo, and the rear rim width is 10.5", since the tire spec states rim width for this tire is 9"-11" would I still be okay to go with 275/40 R21 all the way around?
