After 33 Years of Shaving...
I am finally taking the SAFETY RAZOR plunge!
I've been shaving since I was 16 (Yes. I'm a hairy fok!) Naturally like the vast majority of men. I have been using disposable. Why? The convenience is probably the biggest reason. FYI, I've been partial to and using Gillette Fusion 5 Proglide Power. I remember my grandfather using a safety razor. I also have clear memories of seeing him nick his face. Could it be that I subconsciously avoided them for this reason? Possibly. At any rate... I decided I want to at least try them. If it's not for me, at least I can say I tried it. So after reading tons of reviews and watching a plethora of YouTube videos on the subject and recommendations, I decided on the following Razor. Viking Blades: The Chieftain Reviews indicate it is a very beginner friendly razor and I prefer that it has a butterfly opening design. It came with 'mild blades but I also ordered an assortment of blades with varying sharpness. I will definitely start with mild and hopefully I won't become a bloody mess.... Those of you who already shave like this, chime in...

Welcome to the club! I made the switch 7 years ago and I'll never go back to cartridge style or electric.
I use blades made by Feather. They're amazing. |

I've never used a safety razor before, but back in the days when I wore a suit to work every day; I shaved with a straight razor. My (female) barber got me in to it. I don't remember exactly what brand or series I used as I bought my stuff directly from her, but the smoothness of the shave was awesome! The downside was, there is no small straight razor nick. I experienced a few slight cuts that were no joke, but after I received my first good nick, I never touched it again.

Thanks man. We'll see how it goes. I just got it and plan to use it probably tomorrow. I have also read good things about Feather. They are included in the Variety pack I'm waiting for.

Am I the only one around here that just uses an electric razor and has for the last 20 years with the attitude of "fuck it, good enough"?

I have a very nice Phillips that I bought several years back. For me the shave is too inconsistent: Very close on my chin, not so much on my face and neck.

Same here. Any growth beyond 3 days, and my face gets way too itchy. Hairy + Sensitive Skin = PITA

I'm also very interested to see how 'shave soap compares to the shave gels I've been using for years.

I've experienced similar issues as you describe. I'm just typically too lazy or too busy in the mornings to consider anything else. The simplicity and ease of an electric just outweighs any benefits of a closer and nicer shave that the fancier options provide - at least to my lifestyle. But I'm also not what you would call the height of fashion, either, so don't really listen to me on stuff like this.

Thinking about switching to electric myself. I have some small scars on my face that aren't really noticeable, but the razor seems to catch them every now and then. Usually when I have the least amount of time to spend dealing with the nicks.

I've been using it down below and honestly it goes so well since it cuts much easier. Just don't stab your ball and dick and it's easy... make sure there is shaving cream/gel (lube basically) always and I've never ever cut myself and I'm not someone with 20 years experience lmao.
