No, it gets the B58B30M1 which is the engine BMW designed with Toyota. Basically a reworked B58B30M0, cost reduced, with higher fuel pressure, to give slightly better fuel economy. HP is same as 2017-2019 540i.

The 2020 is already on the road and the specs are on the BMW website. The answer is no.

Toyota had nothing to do with the design of the engine. Oddly, the Z4 gets the higher HP engine while the Supra gets the exact same ratings as the 540. Im sure that was BMW leveraging the fact it is their engine. Of course, we know the 335 hp is under rated. Credible information says it actually puts out in the 380s. So the question becomes, is the M340 and Z4 that is rated at 382 under rated as well?

Looks like this is a good reason to cough up more cash and go with the m550i rated at 523HP. That one has to be fun but really a lot more monthly on a lease. Appreciate all the responses and info.

BMW engine reliability (except for V8s) has never really been an issue. It's everything else (electronics, cooling, transmissions, did I mention electronics?) that have long-term reliability issues.

maybe my memory is not serving me well, but pretty sure I watched a youtube video (interview with Toyota) about how Toyota tested the B58 engine then find the parts that failed in its test criteria and had BMW redesign certain those things

The engine of Bavarian origins has been tuned by Toyota’s engineers specifically for the Supra, as it’s the case with other BMW-sourced vital hardware, such as the eight-speed transmission and the chassis. Despite sharing more than a few parts, the two companies have promised distinct identities for their sports cars that will go well beyond the different body style. Having seen the new Z4 and a revealing image of the Supra, we know for sure their exterior designs won’t have anything in common. The above quote is from an interview with Chief Engineer Tada from Automotive News Europe. |

I watched the same video. BMW engine engineer actually thanked Toyota for their assistance in improving the B58 reliability.

I've got the 355bhp/500Nm M Perf version in my 4GC and am looking to move back to a 5 series next year. The more torque, the better

2017-2019 - 332 lb-ft @ 1380 - 5200rpm 2020 - 331 lb-ft @ 1500-5200rpm Maybe the M1 engine in the 2020 is software detuned? Or maybe the website is incorrect? Seems odd since the M1 typically has 335hp starting at 5000rpm but the bmw site shows 5500rpm like the M0. So, who knows!

Maybe there's a difference in spec between Europe and the US, as there often is? My source was the Wikipedia page on the B58 engine, which is very detailed and well maintained. The B58B30M1 is 335bhp and 500Nm. The G30/31 is listed in the Applications below as one model getting this engine tune from 2020. B58B30M1: 250 kW (335 HP)Edit Applications: 2018-present G05 X5 xDrive40i/sDrive40i[16] 2018-present G07 X7 xDrive40i 2018-present G29 Z4 M40i (in countries subject to EU emissions standards)[17] 2020-present G30/G31 540i 2020–present G32 640i 2020-present G06 X6 xDrive40i 2020-present G11/G12 740i 2020-present G14/G15/G16 840i 2020 Morgan Plus Six[18]

Any series that have the 50i engines will not get the M40i engine. From a business perspective, it makes sense to make the power gap bigger between engines.
But for the MY2020 (not LCI), it's getting the new live cockpit. Already showing up on online configurators. |
