Glass is very costly, this saves the customer so much $$$$....

Honestly no idea....

My guess it has something to do with the LED lights.

Sucks big time. Costs nearly £1k more than the F15 sunroof, and is much worse.

Great design decision BMW

maybe the trade off is having a bigger pano roof?

I dont mind as i'm too old to stand up in the driver side seat with half my body sticking out the sunroof while riding down the highway

the opening is fairly small, but even if it was larger, it would not make a difference for me personally.

during the ordering of my m50d I ordered panorama without that lights. Then I compare the open space to my 2018 VW Tiguan (like 2.5 times less expensive then g05), and I saw that Tiguan has much more open space then BMW, so I swapt that for some other parts. I think that is one of the parts where they done very poor job.

Yep I’m disappointed with the roof. The illumination isn’t that great and I really miss the big opening front panel like in the F15. In the UK the roof is a crazy price compared with most of the G05’s competition. IMHO a fixed glass roof should be standard at this tier and the options come in for opening / LED’s if people really want them...

Did you ever have or drive an F15 with a pano roof? The opening went all the way back into the rear seats. With the windows down on the 1 or 2 hot summers days we have here, it was like a convertible.

Kids loved it. I loved it. Missus didnt care.

never had a F15, but plenty of cars/suv that had roof that retracts all the way back with a full opening. I do understand the experience as i once loved opening it when i was younger living in southern california i guess what I'm trying to say is, I no longer care for a larger opening so its not a big deal for me.

Not sure of BMW's reason,
function/ideal use: probably thinks people no longer use or need a larger opening, surveys??
technical: maybe some technical requirements that prevented them from opening it all the way??
cost savings: maybe to offset the cost of the larger pano roof??

Yeah I can imagine all that glass wouldn't be too welcome in AZ

We only have 1 option in the UK and thats pay £2.5k for the nightclub LED's and 1 foot opening sunroof, or have a metal roof.

actually not too bad, we have it tinted with a high grade tint to keep heat and direct light from heating the interior.

wish we have the led lit roof, no option the time we ordered ours. would of been great for the kiddo in the night drives!

I didn’t notice the opening to be smaller, but the G05 has two stops on the sunroof opening. When you pull the switch to open it, it stops at a partial open to keep wind noise lower. If you pull the switch again, it will go to the fully open position.

OP, could it be that you are not opening the roof all the way?

My E70 has the two stops as well. From what I've seen, the G05 went with a smaller opening on the sunroof this time around. The E70 & F15 sunroofs had larger front openings as well as both panes tilting up. It looks like the G05 not only has the smaller side in the front now, only the front side tilts up.

Am I mistaken here?

Yes my F15 was 2 stage opening and the G05 is just 1. The glass portion itself that opens is also bigger on the F15

I don’t remember both panes tilting on my F15, I think it was just the front.

wait, the f15 had a pano roof that tilts in two panels, front and back?
If im reading correctly, must be a cost saving thing. the cost to make the whole pano tilt in the front and back can be substantial.

I could be wrong with both panes tilting on the F15. My E70 has both panes that tilt, though.

The the F15 had both panels tilting or the front panel slid back in two stages. The first is the comfort stage and the second is maximum opening.

The F15’s roof slid back internally whereas the G05’s slides back on the outside above the larger back panel. Not sure what I think about the over the top slide. I guess it does allow for more headroom in the car...

Also the G05’s smaller front panel does slide back in two stages. A smaller gap to start with which creates less pressure issues in the cabin and the larger fully open stage.

pretty cool, f15 does the double tilt...noticed the difference is the F15 glass goes under when open. G05 has the glass on top when open. most likely cost savings.
