Custom Matte and dull paint colors. Like them or hate them?
When I was a kid, I would hate it when my parents neglect their car and left the paint dull and flat. I would spend my Saturdays trying to polish the car and remove any oxidation only to have it ruined weeks later from the sun and rain. (This was before manufacturers put clear coat on everything)
Fast forward 40 years to now -- dull/flat/satin paint are all the rage. So who likes dull paint or are there still fans of traditional glossy paints? |

Never seen it look good. The Green Hell AMG GT R is about as good as I've seen, but it would still be better with a proper clear coat.
Along the same line, I also hate clear wraps, they all have a noticeable, shallow look to them that's not as bad as matte, but still a look I really dislike. |

It depends...it looks good on a couple cars, but by no means does it look good on everything.

The only place that flat paint belongs is on rat rods and as a primer under glossy paint, IMHO.....

Maybe I'm too left brain biased, but I just don't think of matte paint as being a good choice for a daily driver; never mind for someone like me who parks their car outside 100% of the time.

I had two frozen bmw's and now have a matte range rover. Loved the frozen bmw's, one was bronze and the other blue. The matte black range rover was a mistake in the order. I really dislike it, but couldn't refuse delivery because I needed a car. They at least gave me a good discount because of the mistake.
I agree with the others, depends on the car, and also the color. |

I am not a fan of the frozen BMW colors. I prefer the metallic colors even though I currently have an alpine white BMW.

That's apples and oranges. My Z4 is Frozen Grey metallic. It is frozen AND metallic.

I love it. Adds a degree of uniqueness and that's the whole point.

I agree, that it depends on the car. I personally wouldn't go that route but to each his own.
I saw a Bentley SUV in a matte dark grey, it looked ridiculous.

I've tried hard to like flat/frozen colors but just can't.
Every time I see one on ANY car, including exotics and really expensive ones, I think "I wonder what color they're going to paint that primered car when they save up enough money for a paint job"

I did see a matte Gallardo this weekend that had either been polished with regular abrasives or possibly Armor Alled or similar. It was spotty and shiny in spots, but still clearly meant to be matte. Poor thing.
I did also pass a VW meet full of rat rod Beetles, Things, a Baja and a ton of Buses. Not one of them had any shine. Perhaps the matte trend is just attempting to make new cars look 50 years old? |

Clear coat everything.
I do however like gloss nontraditional colors such as olive drab, coyote, battleship grey. Otherwise, I just like looking at San Marino and Interlagos blue... Mmm.

Matte cars tend to look unfinished when in white/black/grey colors. Also, impossible to keep clean if parked outside, as even washing the car requires special techniques. At my work (autobody) i will flat out refuse to work on the matte cars.
