bmw xdrive v quattro v jag awd
looks like xdrive is as good quattro - well at least on snow ...
BMW faster on the snow handling with DSC totally and better going up a hill, however quattro has better traction once on the move. The tyre type has been taken out the equation so even more relevant |

My S4 had more traction in the snow. The way the BMW puts more power to the rear makes it a bit more fun with a tad less understear but if I lived in alaska i'd pick my s4 over the 4 series x drive

Is was not really fair comparison, since Audi had much bigger torque (tdi diesel vs bmw petrol) and also probably a bit more weight (hence more pressure per surface area, i.e. better grip), which on snow are both much more important then maximum engine power.
Sure this doesn't mean bmw xDrive is better, just saying that comparison was not strictly fair. |

Yeah I never got stuck in my Audis. Xdrive is the worse application of AWD between the two. Quattro and Subaru are both better.

I can't make a comparison to Audi but I can say that the only vehicle I've ever driven that handles snow better than my xDrive was a Ski-Doo.

Actually Subaru Impreza WRX STi has a most capable AWD system of ANY road car. Period. Who wants to know more, google it...
Audi/Quattro has different AWD systems, not all being equally capable - some are very basic, haldex based (all models with transverse mounted engines like A1, A3, S3), and some very advanced awd, like RS5 for example with "Crown Gear" mechanical central diff, rear axle sport diff and torque vectoring. |

I've driven the 911 turbo, Mitsubishi evo 6 and 7, quattro and xdrive over several years of ownership. the 911, xdrive, evo 6 &7 have been driven on wet handling circuit, wet race circuit and dry circuit.
The xdrive easily holds it own and real hoot. Like the video, the DSC definitely needs turning off, otherwise EBC kills its and after a while you will have smoke coming off the brakes. the true torque vectoring systems on the 911 and Evos do behave differently and in my hands quell the understeer. Are true torque vectoring systems better than xdrive in the snow/public roads? As per the video, a definite no imho. if anything the xdrive has the edge. Are cars like the 911 turbo and evo better on a track than xdrive? damn right they are! |

Subaru's are driven by farmers for a good reason, although they're Outbacks and Foresters mainly
