Does debadging help to get less attention from thieves ?
Hi,
I wonder if debadging the car helps get less thieves attention especially on higher end models like 335i ? |

Well, I don't think there are any big bimmerthiefs who would answer to that question..
But if the thief know that he wants to steal a car with a bigger engine etc. - maybe, but he probably knows about the dual exhaust etc. Another reason for debadging is that you won't 'show off' your ride and when you get out on the highways you have lots of unexpected power to own your buddies with.. hehe Last edited by Hawkee; 08-28-2008 at 11:12 AM.. |

Doubt it. If a thief is after a certain car he/she most likely knows what it is. Also, most debadged cars have some mods, which probably attract more attention.

Haven't really heard of any newer model BMW's being stolen. Only way to really steal it is tow it away. Other then smash and grabs I doubt a thief cares if it is a 328 or 335i.
Anyway if you debadge a 335i are you going to redo the exhaust to make it look like a 328 too?? The dual exhaust is way easier to spot by a thief driving around then the badge anyway.

I was not thinking about stealing the car. I was thinking that if a thief sees a higher-spec badge then he might think that there may be more expensive stuff into the car and may try to break in. Also there might be "people" who just want to hurt you because you own an expensive car (it happens sometimes).

I think the blue and white roundel is enough badge for any thief wanting a piece of your car (not to mention people with keys and cans of meat).

I don't know about debadging, but I've heard that one of these can help:

I would venture to guess not. If someone is going to attempt to steal a BMW they are obviously really dumb or a higher caliber thief than your normal joe-schmo. Most likely the latter category. And someone like that knows their cars, so would be able to tell all the little details that distinguish one model from another. If anything a de-badged car would be MORE likely to catch their eye just because it stands out with no badges on it. Just my $.02

When I jack a car I'm going straight for the one with the most aftermarket parts that I can resell. So those flashy rims, carbon fiber accents, ground effect kits, and loud mufflers are prized. Forget whether or not it's a 335 or 328 the engine is stamped with serial numbers in to many places. Just go for quick sell parts. lol.

The best part about debadging is that it makes the car easier to clean & wax

If you buy a 335 in Latin America it will cost you somewhere around $100,000 dollars. The minimum wage is somewhere around $300 dollars A MONTH. Do the math... |

crazier shit happens in poorer countries, but in america I dont think debadging your 335i is not going to deter thieves or any sort. Smash and grabbers dont care what car it is. they're mostly desperate low level crooks (crack-heads and gangsters etc) , the ones that want to steal the whole car(bmw), probably knows how and if he knows how he knows what type of model it is without the badges.
