Any sailors out there?
Curious if anybody else has spent time out on the water? I sold this boat 10 years ago, and have been boatless since. I feel an itch in the earliest stage, and it's beginning to fester... Post your favorite pic on the water, at the dock, or on the trailer! Tell your story!
I was onboard solo this day, and the pic was taken about 10 miles off Oceanside, CA, by another boat that was slipped on the same dock as mine. Ocean was flat, and wind was a solid 15. I was haulin A$$! |

I've been boating my whole life. Started at the family cottage as a toddler and was running around in punts at an early age. I've owned a number of boats, and had a beautiful sail boat that my wife and I bought just after we got married. Had her for about 5 years, the wife is still with me BTW. Our boat "Ska'ana was a 36' CS Merlin, the previous owner sailed her from the east coast to England, down into the Med back to the Caribbean and back to Canada before selling her to us. I'll see if I can find a pic and post it up, we still regret selling her.
We have two boats right now, here they are....both going on 50 years old now. We keep them at the family cottage on Lake Muskoka in southern Ontario. |

Thanks for posting, Salty! Should have known with a screen name like that! I would love to see a pic of your sail boat. Mine was an Islander 36', a great size for a couple, yet easy enough to single hand. Next one will be either in the 42' range, or a cat. Still a few years out, but I can at least see it now!
The pics of the cottage are fantastic! Love the speedster, too! |

you’re cruising the internet for seamen
I’ve never been into sailing, I do miss having a boat, it’s been about 8 years since I sold my last one. One day, I’ll be back |

Fly? Not sure if thats a euphemism for sailing or literally flying so I’ll address both. Several years back I was thinking of buying a used Piper Cherokee and did take some flying lessons but decided not to continue at the time. Maybe I’ll see it through down the road. I have sailed before but prefer motorboats myself. I fish and dive so powerboats are my float of choice. I still like to get out and sail on occasion. Great pics of your sail. Getting out on the ocean is such an enjoyable day and removes stress from the soul. Hearing you talk about it, I bet you feel the same. Fair winds and following seas.

I fished every time I went out, and my longest days were those that I would leave 3am-ish, and head far offshore looking for pelagics. Friggin hilarious to pull up on a paddie 25 miles offshore in a sailboat, and watch the fishermen scratch their heads as to what the heck I was doing there! Caught all kinds of stuff trolling, too. Bonito, tuna, dorado, blue sharks, mako sharks.. I always had 2 lines out the minute I left the harbor. The best part? The ride in a sailboat out and back is free! You're right, I feel exactly the same about being on the water. Never know what you will find out there. |

We catch mako and thresher here within 20m but to get to good blue water( Hudson Canyon) for tuna, dolphin and wahoo is about a 70m run each way, not counting trolling time. Sometimes we get blue water eddies that pull off the Gulf Stream but can’t depend on that. It does get quite expensive in fuel costs. Sold my Grady but fish often on my buddies 30’ Grady Marlin with twin Yamaha 250’s. Four stroke but still swallows fuel at alarming rates running to and back from offshore. Usually run about 25 mph getting out and back depending on sea conditions. Sailing would take way to long to run that far unless one makes it a 2-3 day trip. It can get snotty up here pretty quick so you really need to make way home in a hurry. Great that you’re troll from sail, I’ve did only once when I was about 10 years old and went out on my grandfathers friends beautiful sail boat and trolled about 15m before the owner had enough and wanted to get going and line pulled in. Hooking nice Pelagic's from a sail must be a ton of fun.

The cool thing is that the fish were not always that far out. Kid you not, once saw breaking Yellowfin Tuna a mile out of the harbor, and Dorado from an inflatable just outside the harbor mouth. Hooked a 6' Mako once under full sail, that was brutal. Ended up getting it to the boat after an hour, and cutting it off. Any way I slice it, great times. |

This happened about 8 years ago in L.I. Guys were striped bass fishing for 30-50 lb fish in the fall run on the south shore. The bunker( menhadden) migration was on and they’re striper candy. Most use Penn 113 reels trolling wire line and bunker spoons for the big cows. Look up bunker spoon if you don’t know, I don’t think they’re used outside of the N.E. Most of the fishing is done about 40’ about 200 hundred yards or so from the beach. The people were getting hit and quickly spooled before they knew what happened left scratching their heads. Now a 30lb striper is no slouch of a fish and neither is the tackle so it didn’t make sense. One smart guy put back a spoon on a 50w International and sure enough the rod doubled over. After a nice fight he got it boat side and stuck the gaff. 140lb Bluefin. After that others got in the frenzy for a few days while the blitz lasted but me, I got to the party a few days late and and only caught some nice bass on my boat. Goes to show where’s there’s bait there fish. Another time fluke( summer flounder) fishing in 60-70’ and hooked one. The water happened to be crystal clear that day and we watched the fish coming up. Then an approx 4’ mako pup made a pass on the fish so I cranked fast to keep it from him. Of course I couldn’t reel faster then a mako can swim and he grabbed it. He felt the hook and ripped off about 50 yards in seconds on my small Abu with 20lb line and he rocketed airborne. The line parted and that was that. Last one, was in Kona about ten years ago and we chartered a marlin trip. As you likely know Kona is one of the premier Blue Marlin spots in the world. Well we boarded and got underway. We’re still in the marina and the mate was putting the spread in the water. I’m scratching my head as he’s doing this and thinking maybe he’s just getting the line back on the reels even but no, he’s says we have to get ready we’re fishing right outside the marina. It goes from land to 5,000’ deep in about a 1/4 mile and the giants are right offshore! Of course I got skunked that day. Had to wait till I got to Cabo to get my Blue after two strikeouts in Hawaii. I love being on the salt and fishing, diving, spear fishing and I love swapping fishing stories with other fishermen. Cheers
