New and Stripped? or Used and Loaded?
When I bought my CPO 335 sedan with 20.5k miles, I paid $37k. I could have gotten a new 328 sedan with the auto trans and sport pack and prem pack for about the same amount. but i wanted a 335 and i wanted sport prem nav cold weather auto comfort access shades and everything else. i also liked knowing that if i wanted to drive it to 100000 miles i could. so i got mine. what are some of your thoughts on this? what would u do? what did u do?

If you aren't planning to keep it past the warranty period I think you made a good play. For a 'keeper' I would have gone new with sport package as only option

New car stripped was my choice since the ARP was 0.9 as well.
But 335 used over 328 in a heartbeat to me since performance was more priority.

My budget was insufficient for a new 335 but I went with the stripped new 328 over the CPO 335 since I was concerned about potential wear issues stemming from hard use popping up during my time owning the car and then being blamed by the dealer when I tried to claim warranty. Also, I think hard use isn't going to show up until later on in life, and the CPO 2nd owner will be the one left holding the bag for the repair bill Prior to the 328 I had a WRX that I purchased 'certified pre owned'. I performed all of the usual checks.. full service history, no evidence of mods, no leaks, great compression, clutch was perfect. First gear oil change, metal shavings in the oil, uh oh. 44k into owning the car (86k total miles) engine oil consumption started to trend upwards, turbo seals showing evidence of wear, major service + t-belt change coming due.... the car seemed on the edge of turning into a money pit so I bailed out. Seems like that scenario could happen easily with a CPO 335 and I didn't want to deal with it again |

I bought mine new and loaded lol. But if it were between a used 335 (low miles) loaded, and a stripped new 328 I would take the 335 any day of the week.
As long as its CPO, I would have a hard time ever picking a new 328 even loaded over a used loaded 335.

Consumer reports put out a good article re: new vs used. In most cases, buying a two year old car will save you enough money over the 5 year ownership cost of a new car to cover all of your fuel expense. That is a significant amount of money. Even buying a 2 year old Ford Focus would save you nearly 8 grand over the 5 year ownership cost of a new car.

I just went through this decision process. For comparison's sake I bought a new 2008 335 Sedan w/ manual trans. loaded except nav/idrive for $41,750 +ttt. MSRP was $45,650 (March build, so pre June pricing) With 0.9% financing it was cheaper to buy new than paying $37k cash or finance for a used 335. |

Very true. I got my 330i CPO and it even still has some of the new car smell.
That same CR article also did a comparison on entry luxury cars, i believe with a nicely optioned Acura TL. The savings on a two year old TL over 5 years was something rediculous, like 14 grand when you consider depreciation, fuel, and maintenance cost of a new vehicle. Depreciation is a killer, accounting for nearly 40% after less than 4 years. For me, I don't think I'll ever purchase a new vehicle again unless it's something you can't find new, like a plug in hybrid. |

European Delivery ($$) > New in States ($$$1/2) > Used & Loaded ($$)
An ED car can be had for around the same price as a loaded used car. (I'm sorry, I keep pushing ED, but when I see how much CPO/used BMWs go for, I don't see why more people don't just do ED. Even if you fly there and back on a weekend, it's still worth it.)

i would love to do ED. It's just that my CPO 2006 330i was still much, much cheaper than anything ED could offer. If i were buying new, I'd definitely try to do ED. Unfortunately, I most likely won't be in the market for another BMW for another 8 years or so...

I recently did it this past June, and it was amazing. (And It saved me a bunch of money too.) Looking back on it, I think I enjoyed it a little too much... maybe I joined a cult.

New and stripped without a doubt.
I got my relatively stripped 6mt 335 with only a sport package, metallic paint, and CA. All of the options are a waste for me. I wish my 335 cost me $3k less and didn't have a sunroof, power seats, or the upgraded radio.

I went new and "stripped." I want to keep the car for a long time, and maybe it's my conservative nature, I see the "base model" as being less complex, with less stuff likely to break or go wrong (nav system, electric seats).
With 0.9% financing, and a hefty downpayment, I felt that I couldn't go wrong with the new car. Either way, it's a heck of an upgrade from my 10 year old Chevy.... |
