Last minute road trip north on summer tires
I have the 22" wheels with summer tires. This works great for austin tx. However now need to drive up to MI for a week over Xmas. I don't really want to invest in snows or all season tires for a single week. Any ideas? How bad could it be with those conti summers?

Very, very bad. They will turn into hockey pucks in cold weather, and forget about ice and snow.
Maybe rent a different vehicle. My 22” pzero all seasons are great. You could run them in the winter in tx and still have a good performing tire. Check out the videos in this post: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1195071 |

If the previous posts have not convinced you to not drive with summer tires in wintry condition, let me try. Last year or earlier this year i did exactly what you're suggesting. I don't remember which month it was but i looked at the extended forecast and planed my trip accordingly. On the day of traveling back south i was supposed to travel through I 90 New York. Unfortunately, there was going to be snow fall in some parts of my journey. I changed plans and left previous day and took I 75 instead. I was about 4 hours away from home and was patting my self in the back thinking mission accomplished. It started snowing. There was not going to be much accumulation so i told my wife we're going to stay in the motel and drive home in the morning when they cleared the snow on the inter state. Next morning we were happy to see very little snow accumulation over night. Just a little dusts and it was going to be there for only few more miles as we travel south chances of snow on the ground will be less.No problem i can handle this after all i have lots of experience driving in the snow with all season tires in much worst conditions then what i was facing and I 75 will be clear of snow anyway. Wrong. I 75 was not cleared because there was not enough snow on the ground. Thinking snow will not be on pavement for more then few miles i drove at 30 to 50 miles/hour for about 50 to 100 miles with hazard lights on and extremely scared.
I am very sorry and embarrassed for not thinking of safety for my family and others even though it was completely unintentional . Very fortunate that my trip did not turn in to unfortunate event for my family, myself and people driving close to me on that day. Last edited by Habsone; 12-14-2019 at 05:04 AM.. |

If you want to ride the lightning, which I don't suggest...I would drive my M3 with performance tires in the winter. BUT, it was bone dry out and no lower than 40ºF and maybe 5 miles down to the road. Did this to get the juices flowing.
Forewarning, it might be dry and above freezing, but the tires will say otherwise. It's a bad idea, especially if you need to make a quick maneuver. This was also with RWD, but nevertheless it'll make your butthole pucker up real quick. It's not worth risking/crashing your beautify X5, but more importantly...jeopardizing your safety, family's safety, and others on the road. Rent a Tahoe and just barrel down the road. Otherwise, that drive will be a nightmare and you'll constantly be worried about the vehicle/tires. Plus, people drive like maniacs during the holidays. Good luck, and happy holidays! |
