Informal Review: MSD80, MSD81, MSD81 + JB3, MSD81 + Dinan Stg II

Well here goes my non-technical and very informal review of these cars that I have had a chance to drive. I did the MSD80 (pre 29.2) vs MSD81 review before, but will summarize and change some aspects of my review. All these were 6MT.

MSD80 29.2
In terms of lag, this has maybe a 0.5 second less lag than a stock MSD81. Not much else to talk about here.

MSD81
About a 0.5 second more lag than MSD80 pre 29.2 and louder exhaust.

MSD81 + JB3
The power delivery is absurdly smooth. You can definitely drive it as a stock car if you want, just keeping your lead foot off the pedal. This car is very fast, and butt dyno made it feel faster than the Dinan Stage II I drove. The negatives: you have to go WOT to get all the power; when you shift, I feel a slight dip in the boost until it comes back; I can't get the tires to chirp whatsoever; it does not really change the lag aspects of the car at all.

MSD81 + Dinan Stg II
Special thanks to vegasspeed for throwing me the keys to his gorgeous Montego 335 coupe. The Dinan tune has these advantages I thought: much less lag compared to MSD81 stock and MSD81 JB3, I made the tires chirp and the DTC light come on when doing upshifts! Never was able to do that on the other cars. No drop in boost upon shifting. Only negatives I would say is that I felt the JB3 was more powerful, and the Dinan restricted power a bit in the high RPMs, whereas JB3 pulled all the way through redline.

Conclusion
First off, a tuned car is night and day from a stock car. You realize what you are missing when you drive stock then a tuned car. Next, the JB3 is utterly smooth and you have no idea you are skyrocketing that fast. I do really enjoy that upshift chirp that I can't do with the JB3 however. I have a feeling though, this is MSD81 related and probably those with JB3 can get that DTC light to flash. Valuewise the JB3 can't be beat though.

I'm going to try and find some people with a V3, especially those with the 29.2 lag fix and see if I can convince someone to let me test drive it to get a full comparo. If you have any questions ask away.

Buddy of mine has a v81 and has a BOV and his appears to hold boost in between shifts. I was pretty jealous of it and I dont understand why its frowned upon on these forums if it works.

Cool review. I have a msd 81 with JB3 and spin at 5200 rpm in 1st gear, chirp 2nd gear and 3rd. Oh yeah, 6MT.

Interesting, not sure what the difference may have been. The dinan would flash DTC's under just normal hard shifts.

Anyone else that comes by Vegas, just let me know ahead of time. I thought it was interesting to get some comments from someone with a different engine tune on their 335i. I still only have the stage 2 and will update it when it comes out at the shop. I am curious if the stage 3 will be much different.
