GTR to F90
I am a long time M lover, 1M, M3 (e30) and M4. The M4 was the reason I left, great drivetrain, but did not handle like an M should (in my very humble opinion).
I ended up getting a Lotus Exige 410 which is out of this world, but it's time for a change and a growing family demand rear seats. I am torn between the GTR and M5, has anyone lived with both? I love the drive in both, but these are only afternoon jaunts not day to day living with them - any feedback would be great. I am likely to wait for LCI to get the best product at the time. |

the gtr's rear seats are non existent, m5 also has many creature comforts such as bsm, collision avoidance, massage seats, ac seats, etc. M5 is a way nicer, more prestige car.

GTR
sounds like you like smaller chassis thats tossable around turns. m5 is impressive on paper and all, but not a frill ride. kinda flat for daily driving IMO

Had a 2012 DBA GTR, FBO (Full Bolt On's), Flex-Fuel (E85) for ~5 years. Traded it for the 2019 M5 Comp. More similarities living with each on a daily basis then you might realize, but also some substantial differences.
Both are large vehicles (GTR is 185″ L x 75″ W x 54″ H ~3900lbs, F90 M5 is 195.47" L x 75" W x 58" H ~4250 lbs), so they each have quite a bit of road presence and feel substantial (can't hide that much weight). They will both eat through tires in under 15K miles. Around a track the GTR feels lighter then it is but is prone to understeer. Haven't had the opportunity to track the M5 yet. Performance is very similar as well in stock guise (FBO GTR's run 10.2 - 10.6 @ 130MPH, stock however is ~11.1 @120MPH, in line with the F90), however the way they deliver that power is different. Off the line the GTR is absurd in the way it puts down traction, however it runs out of steam above ~100MPH (again, stock). The M5 is far better at building speed above 100MPH (as evidenced by the trap of the M5 at 126-128MPH vice ~120 for the stock GTR). The brakes on each (non ceramic) are both excellent, but again because of the weight of the vehicles will largely be eaten through quickly (under 30k). The GTR also felt far more visceral then the M5. Cabin noise, suspension harshness, and the way the DCT shifts (and is rear mounted) all contribute to a vehicle that feels like a sports car, albeit a heavy one. In short, if your looking for a fun, track-day like car, the GTR can't be beat. The M5 is no slouch at the track to be sure, but if your looking for something more visceral the M5 is not it. I moved on because I was looking for something far more comfortable and at least as fast, my track days are largely over. Hope this helps. |

Currently have a 2015 GTR, and am looking hard at going to an F90 M5C. Have test driven the M5C, and my impression is that it does possess GTR-level speed (at least stock for stock, and I am not much for tuning and mods). The GTR feels much larger inside than the more “cockpit” type feel of the M5C, but honestly to me feels like you might as well be driving an SUV or truck. It just doesn’t feel very driver-focused, to me, as opposed to the M5C. After that, the tech—at least in the 2015 (i know they did a refresh in 2017, but I haven’t seen one)—is abyssmal. The screen resolution is good enough, but the backup cam is of such low quality it is basically useless. The navigation system is seriously from like a circa-2000 PDA (remember those things?!). Then you’ve got the engine/exhaust sound in the GTR, which is...well, not very good. I’ve tried to love it, but I just can’t. At full boil, it sounds like an angry vacuum cleaner! Looking SO much more forward to the sounds the M5C makes, at least from what I have heard. The GTR handles decently well, but there is also a LOT of road noise, including a very loud roar from my still-stock run flats. Granted, I could change these, but I just can’t immediately ditch a still perfectly useful set of tires. Finally, there is the attention the GTR gets. I do not relish getting attention, so I do not enjoy this facet of driving it. Granted, it is possible I will still get attention as I intend to order an MBB M5C, but I feel like it will still fly under the radar more than my red GTR! Hope this helps anyone looking at the two.

Thank you all. I am testing back to back next weekend; M5c first and then the GTR.
I don't commute a long way, but weekly I may travel back from an airport, tired, dark raining and want to feel cosseted (and could do with AWD for the crappy standing water), hence the Lotus has to go. But then on a Friday night, sleeves up, music on and have a go on the A and B roads near me. I will keep you updated - does anyone know the release date of the LCI? Any thoughts on the updates - power or cosmetic? I can then balance the pre-LCI deal I could push v the shiny new update! |

I mean, definitely go drive both, but when you do I think you will see what I mean. I appreciate the achievement that the GTR was/(is?), but in terms of creature comforts, there is no comparison to be had here. Last edited by ///WeissBisBlau; 01-25-2020 at 11:30 AM.. Reason: More info |

Did both.
M5 has superb power, and surprising turn in from such a heavy car and even on a tight engine, the power delivery is out of this world. You are all very lucky it really is a Jekyll and Hyde machine; is will pootle around town and cruise very happily at 76ish with good economy and when you want to go, it really does. I was sceptical of the torque box, but actually drove nicely and changes with real commitment. A few things though; what are ceramic buttons - cannot find out what it's about and different heater controls? Overall, the real point is, does it make me feel special when I get in it? Ultimately that's the point - I like the rareness and the subtlety, the power and the V8... It's tough and now the service pack has disappeared in the UK! |

By “service pack”, are you referring to the included scheduled maintenance from BMW? Did they take it away completely there in Europe? We still have it here, but only 3 years, so in actuality it won’t cover very much scheduled maintenance. In essence, it’s a “nice to have” here, but wouldn’t be a deal-breaker (or maker). Good luck with your decision! |

Yes, apparently, BMW were losing money on each one, according to the salesperson, though I suspect weren't making as much as they anticipated. Having shopped around, I can get the Comp for the same retail price as the GTR, which I am shocked by, almost £20k off. Now for some hard thinking. |

One more thing to consider might actually be the communities that are involved with these respective vehicles. While people can and certainly do mod their BMWs, the modding community for the Japanese makes are crazy. It seems like it is seen as strange if you DON'T mod those cars, and that is a bit of a departure for me. Sometimes I almost feel as if I don't deserve the GTR, because it is bone stock! While I will do some slight cosmetic mods here and there, I am not one that is going to go get a whole new exhaust, suspension, upgraded turbos, etc. So, I like having a very capable car right out of the gate. Of course, if I should so choose at some later time TO mod the thing, that is certainly a possibility with the F90 M5, unlike my current DD, the E92 M3. I wouldn't consider putting a supercharger on it, as some have done, so it kind of just is what it is. Just a little something else to think about. |
