Angry My baby is a smoker!!

Hello so i recently discoverd smoke coming from the left side of my engine bay near the valve cover area(already had the cover and the vcg replaced) I’ve also noticed a small burning smell on the inside of the car, and also the fuel level doesn’t seem to match the meter when i drive (it goes in 90 gal increments but mine undereports how much i have) But it still drives well does anyone know what that might be? Could be the hpfp? just bought this thing three weeks ago and its already killing me financially but its my first car and i love it!!

Same answer as last week: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1686426

HPFP would not leak or smoke. Gasoline smell is very potent and a gas leak is hard to miss. It would be a very urgent condition (fire hazard), though.

Most probably you still have some sort of oil leak from the valve cover or the oil filter housing. Seems like you have no idea what you are looking at, recommend you get a pro to inspect and advise.

Check the spark plug wells to see if they are filled with oil, also recheck the valve cover bolts maybe missed one on the back Left corner. If the spark plug wells are filled could be valvetronic eccentric shaft actuator gasket on the middle of the valve cover.

Smoke from engine bay and burning smell inside cabin is a sign of oil leak from the VCG. If a shop did your VCG, then bring it back and have them inspect it. If you DIY, then look for signs of seepage at the passenger side corner of the VCG. You may have to clean it up first and then inspect after a couple days.

335 turbo's and turbo hardware plus ccv and pcv.
335 is not a good idea for a first car unless your dad's
a BMW mechanic and still likes you.

Or you are planning on becoming a mechanic and taking
shop classes at place where they have a lift and will let
you work on it.

How many miles on this car?

@ctuna the car has 116k I originally planned to fix it up myself but had no idea of a doozy it’d be to fix it up (dumb on my part) ive been trying to teach myself on working on these things,That’s i put on the vcg myself but youtube Did all the work for me i went in blind and it took all day, and buying the tools killed my pockets. I wish there was somewhere that could do a free inspection, i will try the oil filter housing like said but im not really ready to go back into this thing yet. But its weird because the smoke comes out once in a while from the exhaust but kind of in burst and small amounts as well. (Excuse my novice still learning)

Oil coming out the exhaust is usually not from leaks.
Best to get the Bimmergeeks.net cable and downloads
so you have some diagnostics.
Oil burning in the Engine bay is probably leaks.

If you were able to do the vcg by yourself in a day that's pretty good. That means you have already developed some skill.
Don't judge what you have done by how fast you have done but
if you are successful at it.

I would check the PCV as per this article.

https://blog.bavauto.com/21369/bmw-n...on-pcv-repair/

After that if there are no leaks turbo's and turbo hardware.

You could've easily broken the valve cover when putting it back on and now you have some plastic bit inside your engine melting away mixing with oil and also possibly the pcv within the valve cover will also then suck up oil and cause your valve cover to smoke

I did my vcg and it broke off and I took it back off and found it before driving and bought a new valve cover .

If you did the valve cover gasket yourself as a first timer you most likely did this and should take it off immediately to check to see if you have that missing plastic bit on the inside of the cover. Dont worry about messing it up further you already did the job now you need to double cheak your own work by taking it back off!!

Change your oil and see what comes out might not look pretty

Alright so i got under it, oil is leaking from the rear main oil seal and a little bit is dripping onto the exhaust and burning off giving the off smoke. The valve cover gasket looked fine and secure and the pcv was a little dirty but ok enough.

look around your oil filter housing gasket, those are known to leak and the leak can travel far making you think it’s something else. Very inexpensive quick fix.

If the oil has leaked onto your belt already, you need a new belt as well to avoid it failing and being sucked into the engine, which can destroy the engine.
