Motor Oil choices
I find it hard to believe that Castrol, Pennzoil and Quaker State fail to show a suitable 0w20 or 0w30 for the B58 M40i engine on their websites. Shocking.

BMW oil is definitely a Pennzoil product similar to if not identical to the Platinum Ultra. If you read the description of BMW oil it says natural gas base, "Pennzoil is one of the only oils I know using the natural gas base" and BMW recommends shell premium gas which shell owns Pennzoil. Is there an extra additive package added to the oil that is the question? Yes, the ultra product can be had for $4.50 a qt US, the BMW is about twice that on line. I'm sure if you run the ultra you will be fine. Me, I'll just pay the extra for the two-three oil changes I do a year until someone convinces me the P Ultra is just as good. BMW wants your maintenance dollars for sure. I'm not even sure how to reset my oil monitor, I change my oil myself at 5K miles and then let them do it at the required 10K interval. Not much DIY info out there.

In case I wasn't clear, I only use the BMW oil in my M40I. They do have Pennzoil Ultra in 0w-20 as per the link, I use it in my MX-5 "miata" Except for maybe an additive package I'm pretty sure it's the same as the BMW oil. It's not worth it to me to chance saving $30 a year in oil on a $60k car. I think Redline might have the certification for BMW when I searched. Very good oil also, but it's more $ than the BMW stuff. |
