Which oil do you use if not the BMW brand?
The BMW Longlife-14FE+ SAE 0W-20 oil (I hear) is not fully synthetic, but a semi-synthetic blend. Can someone definitively verify that for me? I have seen several sources that confirm it's a blend, but then I also see things like this:
https://www.amazon.com/BMW-83-21-2-3.../dp/B01IFJ50AW In any case... I am interested in running fully synthetic oil. What do you recomend? Liqui Moly? Pennzoil? Fuchs? Castrol? Motul? Amsoil? I also see this which, I assume, means the LL-14 is not important? https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...enance/1PSryV8 Also, is the Mann HU 6022 Z oil filter just an OEM replacement, or are they the actual supplier that is making the exact same BMW branded filters FOR BMW? |

I also wish I knew what to use. Pennzoil, Quaker State,Mobil 1,Valvoline in full synthetic form do not have BMW approvals even though they are approved for VW, Porsche,Audi ,etc. I believe there is a euro Castrol 0w30 that is approved as well as Motul, and Fuchs as well as the dealer brand of course. Ive emailed a couple manufacturers and have had no replies. The Mann filter is fine although I'm quite sure Mahle is the oem supplier. Hengst is another.

Total Ineo MC3....it’s LL04....And I don’t burn a drop on a 10,000km interval. Once our other vehicles are off free maint, they will receive the same.

Not all Castrol Synthetic is created equal.... Although fine at the intervals I go with, if it’s not properly rated, I personally don’t use it. That means cheap Costco changes are out... but I do out of warranty changes myself anyway...

I'm new to the M40i world....to be honest...didn't know till now it was a 0W20 fill.
Looking at the specs...its bog standard ACEA A1/B1...not ACEA A3/B3-B4..usually used in performance engines...(High Temp-High Shear oil) I think I will be going with something that remains A3/B3 etc...once out of the free maint years... It is going to take quite a mind-shift to suddenly believe A1/B1 is good enough... |

Let me rephrase, does anyone know if BMW oil is Group 4 or 5, or Group 3? (I'm guessing 3)
"Did you know that 80-90% of an engine oil is Base Stock? The rest is made up of Additives. So to be the best synthetic, you would think you would need to have the best synthetic base stock as a start. Particularly PolyAlphaOlefins (PAO – Group IV), Esters and utilization of Alkylated Naphthalene’s. (Group V). These were the original synthetic base stocks as tailor made from building blocks using chemical processes to create the “perfect” oil molecule. However, hydrocracked base stocks (Group III) can nowadays also be marketed as synthetic but are still mineral oil based." https://bestsyntheticoilguide.com/sy...synthetic-oil/ |

Looks like it's Group 3. Damn.
"Base Stock is the material that oil starts from - petroleum-based or true synthetic. All oil is classified under one of five Groups, I-V. Groups IV and V are full synthetic and have no petroleum base. They use synthetics that are more resistant to heat and stress than petroleum-based oil. High Performance and Racing oil are almost always Group IV or V. Groups I, II, III are all petroleum-based with III being the highest quality. All BMW-approved oils are Group III yet are still marketed as synthetic oils. This is to avoid confusion with the different base stocks of Group IV (PAO) and V (ester). Any oil brand that wishes to be approved by BMW must be a Group III base stock. So it's common to see premium high performance oil that is better than BMW oil but does not have BMW approval. Red Line Oil encountered this with their own High Performance oil that could not be BMW approved due to their Group IV and V base stock. They had to formulate a different oil with a Group III base to get the BMW approval (Red Line Professional Series). This oil actually performs worse than their High Performance oil in laboratory tests but carries the BMW stamp of approval." https://www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-Engine-Oil/ |

According to this article, might be best to avoid group 5:
https://blog.amsoil.com/are-all-synt...ii-vs-iv-vs-v/ Sorry for spamming, hoping this is eventually a good thread to reference for people that have oil questions in the future. |

I’ll be keeping my life simple...Total first pick and followed by Ravenol...My go to brands for my X6M...I’ll be dropping the oil in our M40i at 3000 miles or so...I’ll use the Total.
