Agree , it might be legal but I too feel uncomfortable watching any autobahn video when travelling at very high speeds.&it only takes a car to pull without seeing you and you don't stand a chance.
It's not the speed but the differential in speed that's the factor here. I know that's a dampener on this thread but I think this sort of stuff should be left to be on a track |

Driver behavior, agreed, is better ... or at least more conducive to left lane passing and regimented freeway driving. That said, in 2014, 40 min after I'd picked up my new indv M4, i was in the left lane and a guy one lane to the right put on his left signal, moved into my lane ahead of me, and kept going right over the shoulder into the concrete barrier almost flipping, kicking up a shit ton of rocks and dinging up my clear coat Luckily I was only going about 100 at that point, coulda been worse. That's one of a ton of examples I've seen on the autobahn so - yeah - much better than the US, but I sure wouldn't say drivers are "designed" for high speed. the world is full of morons. Roads .... ehhh I'm gonna somewhat disagree - but qualified. First, I was a civil engineer who's designed roads, albeit 25 years ago. The highway curves, etc are standard assumptions, speed, etc. so in that sense yes I'd guess the autobahn roads are "designed" for higher speed (but who knows how much? ) With that said, I find them no higher quality / different than many US freeways, at least the ones I've driven extensively on, which is basically west of the mississippi. In fact, there are a ton of US freeways I'd MUCH rather drive high speed on than much of the autobahn (280 san jose to SF, 80 across Wyoming, etc - woot! ) Anyway, beyond most German drivers adhering to left lane rules (and über alles prestige) - which simply avoids annoyances - I wouldn't say the German autobahn is oh-so-much-better road-quality-wise or people-wise for high speed driving. The autobahn roads, in general, are somewhat better, but driver beware, it ain't no high-speed-run empty airstrip! Now if we're talking German B roads? Then you better muthafuckin believe it - I once saw a road crew hand sweeping fresh black top in the middle of fucking nowhere. German B roads are the shit! In fact, if I'm going to sport tour anywhere in Germany, I skip the autobahn and go right to the B roads! The autobahn is fun (during the 5% of the time there's no traffic), and you can drive super fast if you want, but I'd say in general, past about 120-130mph, you're probably overdriving your reaction time for the road design, and certainly for whatever stupid shit another driver is going to do. |

I think the Germans need to go back to the 155mph unofficial limit that some of the manufacturers use.
I think using the autobahn to do 200+ mph is insane as the differential is crazy, maybe 140++ if it's a van or truck.

1) Not legal. There is a law that forbids this kind of "unnecessary driving". 2) Not legal and dangerous. "High/Top speed" tourists, that try their hand at driving a car on an open road at more than 100 mph, with no proper training or required/necessary skills. Some died, some were almost maimed in crashes. Some high profile accidents too. Yeap, that speed differential is dangerous. Would never attempt driving over 100 mph on a 2 lane autobahn with other vehicles present. Every time I drive at 180 or more, I do it on 3 lane autobahn with at least 2 lanes free for miles ahead. |

Actually, the drivers "are designed" to hog the middle lane, at any speeds. While the right lanes is free for miles. And they will cut in front of you, disregarding the speed delta. |

On this two lane with that much traffic? Insane, and not the kind I respect. I agree this delta was too much given those conditions IMHO . Yes, in general, Germans do have far superior high speed skills, but not everyone on those roads is German. All it takes is one of the lesser skilled drivers to move over into that left lane without constantly scanning their rear view (which is what it takes to pick up on a car arriving that much faster), and BAM. No amount of skills will allow you to react in a meaningful way in our beloved, higher center of gravity SUV. I wanted to get my limiter-removed Stage 2 F97 up on the autobahn before I moved back but was unable. I wanted to see what it topped out at but would have not attempted under these conditions, and I do love speed....... Last edited by MrItaly; 02-28-2020 at 03:48 PM.. |
