The encouraging news despite COVID-19 thread
We are all drinking negative news from a fire hose right now. Sometimes it feels like the current situation will be permanent (it wont). While I suspect this thread will have a bit of a slow start my hope is that it samps up.
Lets post anything encouraging we hear related to COVID. i.e. debunk a myth, post improvements/progress, acts of kindness. Ill start. Without going into my industry a product related to it which was made in China and had the plant shut down due to COVID has just reopened and they are back to production. Who cares about the the product, but that's at least a sign of progress somewhere. I also got two new jobs yesterday into my company. We are all set to work from home (not a stretch for us) and people around us are showing small signs of adapting to the work. Id also like to bust a myth: https://www.bbc.com/news/51929628 |

One positive note is that future outbreaks will now have a set standard in how they will be handled. They may not be handled the way that all of us agree upon, but we as humans tend to not have strategies set in place until something like this occurs. Perhaps this is the situation, that forces us to have measures in place, to reduce casualties in the future of a potentially more devastating outbreak.
On a similar note, I do foresee this changing societal norms on some level.

Props for this thread. Let's hope that it will catch on.
A positive for me is that I have been in contact with my family (Phone) more than ever. Before, I would be busy and think I will call later to see how they are doing. We tend to get so caught up in our day to day lives. When you are forced to slow down, you learn to appreciate the smaller things that are so easily taken for granted.

I work in healthcare and it seems the vast majority of doctors believe that a lot of this response is over the top and exaggerated. Mostly by the media. The mortality rate is 0.7% and those are almost all old people and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
That being said I'm struggling to stay positive about the situation as it's very likely going to screw up my Performance Center Delivery and weekend in Asheville afterward. Missing out on a weekend in the mountains with your brand new Bimmer is a big deal when you live in FL and 10 hours from the nearest mountain.

encouraging news?
For commuting traffic has been glorious. Parking wonderful. Wait times for takeout excellent. No one feels the need to hug or kiss or even stand close to you. If more people continue the work from home schtick this is so peaceful. Seth |

Haven't even been out to any store, but I've always thought the current system where everyone has to go drive at the same time every day to go sit in a cubicle in front of a computer is ridiculous. While there are plenty of people who need to be physically at a place to do their job, I'm sure theres even more who don't. I wonder after all this is done how many companies will continue some of their wfh policies.

the positive is that i'm salaried and we are pretty much blocking all non-urgent patients and patients who could possibly have corona from being seen in clinic. so my job will be cake for the next week or two. Saw one patient this morning and I have a phone call with another this afternoon.
government is stepping in and letting us bill Medicaid and medicare i believe for telephone visits now too.

The CITGO right near work is advertising premium at $2.14/gallon. I suspect some error (lower than national wholesale) but I'm seeing prices around $2.70 all over town. HPDE in April is probably cancelled, but at least I can head up into the mountains for cheap.

I had read some reports about grocery stores in other areas reserving Monday to Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. for vulnerable shoppers such as senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.
I'm hoping to see them do something similar here.

As of today in the USA of all the people who contracted this thing less than 2% died. That’s quite similar to the ‘regular’ flu fatality stats.

Except we don't really know how may people have it, since we're only testing some of the symptomatic people. Like there were no cases in W. Va. until yesterday, that's only because they hadn't tested anyone.
