https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...w=1433&bih=717 Additionally, I saw Mario race USAC midgets (they look like miniature sprint cars) at Ascot Park 1/2 mile clay oval that was located south of the LA International airport. https://www.pinterest.com/idontownacomput/usac-midgets/ My favorite US driver was Dan Gurney. I saw him race at multiple locations in southern California. My favorite Dan Gurney memory was his F1 win at Spa.... On June 18, 1967, Gurney took a historic victory in the Belgian Grand Prix. Starting in the middle of the first row, Gurney initially followed Jim Clark's Lotus and the BRM of Jackie Stewart. A muffed start left Gurney deep in the field at the end of the first lap. Throughout the race, Gurney's Weslake V-12 suffered a high-speed misfire, but he was able to continue racing. Jim Clark encountered problems on Lap 12 that dropped him down to ninth position. Having moved up to second spot, Gurney set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 19. Two laps later he and his Eagle took the lead and came home over a minute ahead of Stewart.

"Jacky Ickx" , the legendary Belgian race driver
Too much victories to write about => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacky_Ickx Nicknamed "Mr. Le Mans" on account of his victories at the prestigious competition. He excelled for 30 years in the world of motor racing. Born on 1 January 1945, the young Jacky came a long way, having dreamed of becoming a gardener despite the fact his father was a car journalist and part-time racing driver, and his younger brother was a pilot. And then, one day, he hopped on a motorbike... and zap, he was hooked by the thrill of speed! That's where it all started! Jacky Ickx started competing in 1963, and took part in the Motoring Tour de France. He was only 18 at the time. 1969 was a turning point in the Belgian's career. On 15 June, the 24-year-old driver became a legend by winning the 37th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. He started his race by walking to his car, while all the other drivers rushed to theirs. He put on his safety harness and set off. A life-saving act, as during this race, 37-year-old English driver John Woolfe lost control of his car at more than 220km/h and was fatally thrown from his car. However, the race continued and was Jacky Ickx's first major victory. His actions made history, since in 1970 the drivers started the competition without running to their cars. Jacky Ickx also made an impact in Formula 1, becoming two-time vice world champion in 1969 and 1970. He won eight Grand Prix between 1968 and 1972, in France, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Austria and the Netherlands among others. Double world champion in endurance racing with Porsche in 1982 and 1983, Jacky Ickx also holds the record for the number of victories in long-distance events, with more than fifty to his name. From the mid-1980s, he started to take part in off-road competitions. In 1983, he won the Paris-Dakar edition alongside French actor Claude Brasseur .

1961 Italian GP
I keep reading up on the 1961 Italian GP where American Phil Hill won in a Ferrari shark nose.
Out of the five Ferrari's entered Hill's won and the other four fell out with of course von Trips' horrendous accident tripping up against Clark and launching the car into the crowd killing himself and 16 spectators. |

Sorry,not drivers but machine.
Just couldn't resist putting this on from the film.To me one of the nicest classic F1 cars,a 312 I think with that sperexed white exhaust a work of art matching the red bodywork. Bellisimo!

They had no idea that it could launch an out of control car like an aircraft and what made it worse was the wreck was spinning like a pendulum going through the air through the crowd compounding the injuries on casualties and with what I can see von Trips' body thrown out the car onto the track with cars bearing down... truly a nightmarish scene. It is not dissimilar to the '55 Le Mans horror when an out of control Jaguar was also spinning through spectators after losing control. |

Back in time , these race cars caught also very often fire . It was horrible . A disaster ... No wonder that Jacky Ickx said : "It's a miracle I'm still alive"

All GP drivers are quick thinking and he would have seen that exhaust pipe coming off the car looking at it right in front of him! on the banking and 2-3 seconds sliding on the track before contact with the Ferrari is optimum time to avoid the errant pipe . If Max was in the Ferrari he would have side stepped it easily. |

Grand Prix the movie by John Frankenheimer was simply spectacular (and still is)....I saw it as an 11 yr old racing fan at the ultimate movie house....Cinerama; this was a HUGE screen that was curved and my understanding is that there were three projectors that were required on the curved screen; this movie was epic and (as we can see by the interest today!) is still epic.
