Remote Software Update Wiped All Previous Coding
I did the annual BMW remote software update to the latest version on my I drive at home over the weekend using my BMW connected App.
I was not aware before carrying this out, that it would wipe all the personalised coding I had applied using my Bimmercode App over the last few weeks. Fortunately I had made a note of exactly what options I had coded and ended up spending a couple of hours re coding all my options back to the car with Bimmercode. Maybe it is just me that didn't realise this would happen? |

Yup, unfortunately, whenever your car gets a software update, all custom coding is gone -- and sometimes even settings. I noticed that sometime ago when my F30 had to have software recode -- I keep a cheat sheet for that reason; think the recode does a reset of software Hope that helps!

Can confirm, updated to 03.2020 and it wiped everything, including the dash and M logo

These are software updates for the iDrive not full on iStep updates. I've never believed they are also capable of modifying the ECUs that control the exhaust etc. As far as I am aware it has never been proven and remains a forum rumour. Happy for me to be told otherwise.

They don't come up in the digital dash though which is weird. Unless I've missed a setting.

So I just went to the dealer this weekend for a sunroof issue and asked if they could push the 07/2020 update and was told that it would cost $200 and that BMW does not do software updates for free anymore. Is there any truth to this?

I had issues in the UK and emailed ConnectedDrive who gave me an email to show to my dealer saying you will update it for free. As long as you are under warranty they have to do software updates as the over the air updates aren't happening or aren't up to date

Really disappointed at this update process
I've written software for over 10 years and this just shows how far car companies are behind in technology processes.
I can't believe they wipe everything, my wife spent 2 hours setting up a brand new 55k car with the dealer and then an update just wipes everything, I'm amazed. Imagine if you updated a national grid power plant and all of the settings went back to default. I doubt people would accept that. It's a really poor effort by BMW and just shows they don't have the correct developers building their software or they are under far too much pressure without the proper resources to deliver responsibly tested configuration mapped updates. Shame on you BMW! I nor my wife want to after every update. I was looking at the new i4 coming next year but this forces me back to a sterile drive of a Model 3 Tesla. Sorry for the rant but I can't help it. Get your sh!t together BMW. |

Thanks ifr. Sorry for my frustration rant, I just read "Remote Software Update Wiped All Previous Coding". I wasn't aware people were able to create custom coding.
We have just got back from the dealership where the agent still claims a standard OTA software update could wipe all settings. After the last auto update we lost all voice commands, you had to shout, and I mean really shout "hey BMW" to get it to activate and then it would always respond with "I'm sorry, try .....". All other configs like seat positions, heads up display, speed warning, cruise control distances just went back to defaults. I'll set everything up again and get the next update installed as soon as I can to ensure it's not a hardware fault causing it to role back to a default. Systems all seem to be working after return and another update so wonder if we had a bad config from the start? Having looked again I'm on the wrong series forum anyway Last edited by putty; 02-17-2021 at 11:54 AM.. |
