After install, ohlins giving trouble, advice wanted!

I had a reputable shop install ohlins rt coil overs and millway street camber plates, then went to chewerks to get an alignment. After alignment, I have noticed that when I turn the wheel all the way in either direction, the steering wheel will remain pointed partially in that direction instead of returning to center. Anyone have ideas as to what it could be?

Current theories include:
1) steering rack needs software to match the new setup
2) worn bearings (unlikely)
3) an error in the alignment
4) maybe a spring load issue?

Are you sure you're not running when steering wheel is cranked?

Definitely not rubbing, it had -2.8 degrees camber and a little toe, plus it’s on 245/35...kinda weird

Make sure you have the correct springs installed at the correct shocks!

So we are agreed, after a little more looking it seems to be binding. Will get it on a lift soon. Could either be too much preload, or faulty install...is there a way to check for spring preload without lifting the car?

Unfortunately not. You need to be able to measure the gap between the top locking preload nut (adjusted with provided wrench) and the bottom of the spring perch. It is in the manual if you stall have it, with the recommended measure.

Be sure and validate that the springs you have are in fact the ones recommended for the M2. In my case, mine had springs from m3/m4 which are quite a bit heavier and the gap recommendation is different. The part numbers are on the springs and should match what is in the manual.

Ohlins have been an absolute PITA for me. I have spent in time and money more fixing issues than I bought them for. They are way over-sprung IMHO. Replacing springs tomorrow.

Can you post your alignment settings? If its only after you got the alignment, I'd be look at what changes they made and if they have the before and after numbers.

Caster has to do with steering return, so I would look at this first. While this is not adjustable on M2, other changes made to the alignment may have led to to less caster and as a result "less" steering return to center.

TC Kline is replacing them today. I will report back after I have a chance to drive it.

As an update, I picked my car up from TC Kline today. My only regret is that I didn't just buy his suspension setup from the beginning. He installed 400lb/in (70NM/mm) front and 700lb/in (123NM/MM) rear. Fronts are 7" (about 178mm) and rear are 10" (254mm). All 2.5" ID. They are customer made for TC Kline by Hyper Coils (www.hyperco.com). Original plan was 600LB rear and 300 front, but the ID wouldn't work on the Ohlins for the front. This set up is pretty close to his M4GTS. He resprung that lower than OEM.

Interestingly, he did not have to reset ride height. This tells me the new springs are holding the car up and at least not too soft to cause it to sit lower.

I have only driven about 20 miles since but it is significantly better. Straight-line stability is as good as OEM or better and overall ride is a bit more firm but not uncomfortably so. No more constant steering corrections due to rough pavement or bumps and rear is a bit more planted.

Really nice guy and it is really valuable that when I call, he almost always answers. Especially since he is local to me.

For reference, the Ohlins springs I had were 230NM/mm rear (1,311LB/in) and 200mm and front was 90NM/mm (513LB/in). This was the rear spring recommended for M3/4 vs 190 for M2. Not sure why this was on an M2 Kit...
