Hi everyone - recently noticed a prominent line of "something" running down the exact middle of the lower part of the hatch. It looks like grease mark or something seeping out of the hole that's smack in the middle of the lower edge of the upper hatch.

I gave her a wash and it's still there, pretty obvious. Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas to clean it up - clay bar?

I had exactly the same! Wondered where it came from. Very greasy and exactly in the middle. Didn't come off with the pressure washer. Ad the end I took it of with a wheel cleaning product. Maybe soap would have done the same?

My car had been standing in the sun for quite some time. I think it was some greasy product that became more liquid?

It's Cosmoline, you might notice some on the rocker panel also.

Always to the rescue! Thanks, I'll see if I can get some super hot water to rid of it before trying a chemical.

Use a basic cleaner wax to remove cosmoline. Door jams at the corners will redeposit in the super hot weather. Just rub some cleaner wax on it and it’s gone.

I just got a 2021 X5 M50i and noticed the exact same thing. It is coming from the small hole in the bottom lip of the upper hatch. Something greasy is in there and it leaks out right down the center. I clean it off, go for a drive and it comes right back.

I'm at about 200 miles and hope whatever this is will stop before the paint gets ruined.

For what it's worth I used a bug/grease remover and I don't notice it anymore. It may happen until the amount within the hatch isn't enough to leak again.

I ended up spraying a small bit of bike chain degreaser in the little hole, followed by a shot of canned air.

Hasn't dripped since.
