BMW Will Offer Full-Electric 5 Series and X1
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Will Offer Full-Electric 5 Series and X1 Via Autonews BMW to offer full-electric 5 Series, X1 in emissions push July 27, 2020 FRANKFURT — BMW said it will offer full-electric variants of its 5 Series and X1 models as part of sweeping product overhaul unveiled on Monday as the automaker seeks to lower vehicle emissions on the road and during production. "In 10 years, the goal is to have a total of more than seven million electrified BMW Group vehicles on the roads — around two thirds of them with a fully-electric drive train," the company said on Monday. Automakers have been pushing EVs ever since European lawmakers in December 2018 ordered a cut in carbon dioxide emissions from cars by 37.5 percent by 2030 compared with 2021 levels. This will come after a 40 percent emissions cut between 2007 and 2021. Starting next year, BMW Group said it will offer five full-electric cars: the BMW i3, the Mini Cooper SE, the BMW iX3, the BMW iNext and the BMW i4. The iX3 will launch the company's EV offensive. In total, BMW will have 25 electrified models on the roads by 2023 -- around half of them full electric. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse declined to give a launch date for the the 5-Series or X1 EVs. Both models will be available in the future with four drivetrain variants including full-electric, plug-in hybrid, diesel and gasoline with 48-volt technology. The automaker also said its management compensation will be more closely aligned with compliance to climate targets and that carbon emissions from production and sites would be lowered by 80 percent per vehicle. BMW Press Release: Product strategy: fully-electric models in high-volume series The BMW Group is already a leading provider of electrified vehicles: By the end of 2021, the BMW Group will offer five fully-electric production vehicles: the BMW i3*, the MINI Cooper SE*, the BMW iX3*, the BMW iNEXT and the BMW i4. Another milestone will be the upcoming generation of the BMW 7 Series. The BMW brand flagship will be available with four different drive technologies: with a highly efficient diesel or petrol engine with 48-volt technology, as an electrified plug-in hybrid and, for the first time, as a fully-electric BEV model. The company will have 25 electrified models on the roads by 2023 – half of them fully electric. In addition to the BMW 7 Series, comprehensive electrification will be rolled out throughout the model line-up: Further examples of the “Power of Choice” will be the high-volume BMW X1 and BMW 5 Series, which will also be available in the future with all four drive train variants – fully-electric, plug-in hybrid, diesel and petrol with 48-volt technology.

The iX1 is obviously going to come in the form of the next generation U11 model, and I would say with near certainty that the i5 will also not join the lineup until the next generation G60 model.

Tesla has always intrigued me but is a little too bland. A proper 5 series with ~300 mile range is something I'd consider

Missed the boat for me. I would have bought any of these at the start of the year, but none available (I had a 2014 i3 for 3 years), so I bought the 2020 530e. I'll be trading it in 2022 or 2023 but it won't be for any of these EV's on a modified ICE platform. It will be a dedicated EV on a skateboard platform (yes, the i-Next is this, but it's bigger than I want for my in-town use if it's the rumored size of the X5). I think BMW is too late with these combo ICE/PHEV/EV platforms. Their moment was last year to 2021. Rumor is that M-B is going to discontinue their reworked GLC to EQC EV after 2021 for a dedicated EV platform EQC. There is speculation that M-B now considers the combo platform to have been a mistake. I fear that BMW being late to the game with their combo platforms will hit them badly in cash flow after 2021 and their status as an independent manufacturer is in danger.

I hope BMW gets serious about electric cars and brings a car to market that can compete with the Model S and the EQS.

Does that mean if emissions go down for those product groups, it can go up for others? Asking for a friend

They already are appliances, and many of the folks buying them treat them as such. I think it's a non-issue. One of my colleagues regularly tracks his Senna, McLaren 720S, etc, but gushes about his 3 (previously had an S) as being a perfect DD with a killer sound system to boot. I think he's nuts, but the point is, these cars *are* appliances, and I don't think BMW is going to make an electric car any time soon that inspires driving passion and upends the industry. The current 5er doesn't even do that.

Quite market dependant. US is a whole different ballgame Vs U.K. where now here every other car seems to be a 330e..which TBF is great.
Even for you guys in the US vastly different for Texas vs California I'd imagine EV take up is still not too practical in many states. Interesting times. Exciting times.

which is exactly what the demographic who buys them expects. it's just a thing to get them from a to b and its the latest and greatest cool tech toy just like their iphone. Tesla was a market disrupter. exactly what the industry needed. Its only a matter of time before large capable manufacturers surpass tesla.

I honestly think if BMW gave the 3-series Merino leather and nicer materials and multi-contour seats (US doesn't get this sadly) a lot of 5-series owners would switch. The new 3 is also extremely close in interior dimensions to the 5 despite being a "compact" car. Interior materials and a V8 are the only things holding it back from capturing the 5er's market.

But I struggle with the long charging times of current EVs and living in the city, charging is a hassle. I am patiently waiting for solid state battery technology to make its way into BEV and hope for the day a BEV can be recharged in the same time it takes me to fill up my 17-Gallon fuel tank: 5 minutes.

Came from an E90 as a family car that did well while my 2 children were still small. But as soon as they grew (They are very tall) needed better rear seat legroom. The 5-Series G30 is perfect for the job. We don't like SUVs truckish/high center of gravity riding vehicles so any X3/X5/X7 completely out of question. The G30 fits the bill nicely. We couldn't ask for a more comfortable and refined family set of wheels! And drives fantastic for my needs/wants!

My E90 as lovely as it was wit its handling and more analogue steering/driving experience was on the harsh side with a suspension that transmitted way too much into the interior compartment and an artificially heavy power steering that made low speed maneuvers and parking needlessly high effort. I get my opinion is unpopular on a enthusiast forum whose generally demeanor as of late is to hate on anything BMW does these days but I believe they still get many things right for those of us that drive and use our cars like the rest of people do: in the street.

In the US, BMW is prioritizing iNEXT while skipping the iX3. From a product planning point of view, is iNEXT - the larger vehicle - capable of displacing iX3?
