Yes I would.

I had posted awhile back that some companies, Hyundai in particular, have adapted quite well and are starting to beat the Germans at their own game. I think BMW has fallen asleep at the wheel. I love BMW, but do not like where the company is going.

And again, yes I would buy it.

Hyundai recently developed inline 6 engine which I believe was never used before in their automotive history, presumably thanks to Alby.

Once Hyundai makes a reliable 8000 rpm straight 6 RWD 6MT coupe that looks like latest Genesis variants, I will give it a shot.

I was tracking my M2 at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium last year, and Hyundai was there with the i30 N. They were rather quick.

Now I wouldn't trade my M2 for one of those, but hopefully they develop a competing RWD platform at some point.

You're not kidding. I can't imagine Biermann using subpar ingredients when doing R&D at Hyundai. Can't wait to see what comes from them. Love the competition.

And frankly at this point, the badge stereotype is what hurts it more. I see that changing though.

If you look at the products the are releasing, including everything from economy cars to high end vehicles, its obvious they are not going for best in class performance. They don't have an engine making more than 400-ish horspower, and have no apparent plans to update the Tau V8 (such as be turbocharging it for example) to make it competitive. Furthermore, their turbocharged V6 and I4 engines are middle of the road (although some vehicles that use them are very competitive within their segment and price bracket).

That said, they are obviously all in when it comes to EVs. No, they haven't yet released their first EV built on a dedicated platform, but that is coming in the next few years. What they have done is created electric versions of multiple existing products, and they have some of the most efficient electric drivetrains in the business.

So, I see the the Korean trio becoming a powerhouse, including in high performance vehicle segments, as we round the turn more toward the end of the decade and EVs begin to become more compelling as replacements for gasoline counterparts. They are going to have a lead on the laggards - you know who you are - and they are going to be a significant player. Not every automaker will survive the transition. The Koreans will not just survive, they'll thrive.

I love what they’re doing over there. The Veloster is ugly, but if they had the i30 N hatchback stateside, I could see being tempted.

If the G70 had come with a manual with the bigger engine, I would have seriously considered it instead of the M2.

As someone who sold most of their BMW stock, I am appalled at their EV strategy. Surely their execs have all driven a Tesla Model 3 and could see the proverbial writing on the wall?

I used to think BMW was a forward thinking automotive company, and maybe they are not the worst here, but I no longer have confidence BMW will maintain their position and value of their brand over the next 20 years.

The downfall of Sony and rise of Samsung and LG in the consumer electronics industry show that a sterling reputation and technology leadership can be squandered completely. Samsung largely changed their brand perception from cheap junk to premium; I don't see what is stopping Hyundai from eventually doing the same. They might never be Porsche, but BMW should be worried.

With that being said, what made BMW such a great brand was the fact you got both sportiness and luxury in perfect harmony. Unfortunately Hyundai is at a position in the market where they will never be able to put a nice interior in a car. And for as impressive the Genesis G70 is as a first effort compact luxury sport sedan, it still comes up short in that category. The interior design and some of the material choices are just a turn-off for me.

With that being said, if the G70 proves to have a great reliability record then it could very well become an attractive buy. BMWs self-implode out of warranty and become more headache than they are worth.

Unless you spend the money on a leather dash and nappa or merino upholstery, BMW interiors are pretty bad IMHO. Dakota upholstery on a luxury car is a turn off to me and the only reason I upgraded to a 5 series from a 3 series. If Hyundai can make and sell a car that better meets my needs, I will go there. BMW has to meet its customer needs, not the other way around.
