Rear outer tail light loose

Noticed my outer taillight on my f36 is loose toward the front (little play). Took it to the dealer as it's still in factory warranty and they said that it's not covered because they think the owner before me backed into the taillight, or something hit it and replaced it, causing the metal part that attaches to the body and taillight to go in? He said they can't fix it there and I'd have to take it to a body shop. Anyone have similar experience or any thoughts on this?
