Winter tire advice for M40i

Starting the search for winter tires and noticing alot of 18" packages with 60 series rubber. Any comments from owners with this setup? My car came with the 245 50 19s on the skinny 7.5 inch rims and no issues. Or do i ante up and stay with 50 series winter rubber on 19s? As well how obnoxious is the BMW warning if tpms not installed on the winter rims.. Thanks

I read somewhere in this forum that 18 inch wheels do not clear the M40i brakes. So might need 19s.

BMW winter 18" packages will clear 30i calipers but not M40i calipers.

TireRack has 18" winter wheel and tire packages available. I put 18" Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 ZP tires (run flats) on my M40i. No problems with the recommended package at all. There are eight different 18-inch winter tires and dozens of inexpensive wheels still available. I went the 18-inch route and saved thousands over the BMW OE route.

I, too, bought a winter wheel and tire set from Tirerack at 18 inches. Smooth and quiet, and great for holey ski roads.

Im probably going with a pirelli 235 55 19 tire and rim setup as a compromise. Sidewall on the 60 series tire looked massive.

I am about to order a set from Tire Rack. I specced my X3 with the 20" RFTs, but I want my winter wheels to be 19"

Can I just order a set of 19" wheels and winter tires from TireRack or do I have to do anything special to make the 19" set work since it's normally riding on 20"?

I switched from OEM 19" to the OEM 20" with no problem. Tires need to be the same circumference. You just change the TPMS monitoring system to the different tire size. I have a set of 19" 698M wheels with all season Pirelli with 1,000 miles on them if you're interested.

THis is going to be my first winter in my M40i. It has the 21 inch wheels. Are you guys finding tire/wheel packages or tirerack (or similiar) that are cheaper than @ shopbmwusa? This package is 2.5k https://www.shopbmwusa.com/product/6...EEL---TIRE-SET

thanks

I got a set of 19" 691 wheels on Blizzaks. Been happy and confident with them in the snow. I wish the wheels were cooler but it's nice to not stress when you're dealing with weeks of slush, salt, and generally miserable conditions.

Any 19 with suitable width will work fine. Just keep the tires to be the same outside circumference. Easiest way is to pick --> choose the same tire size that BMW provides for the OEM 19" option.

I like the 695 black wheels with a 20" winter tire. I also like Nokian tires. But the only option for the 20" is the Hakka R3 which is 245/40x20. That's less than the original 245/45x20 that I would get with the X3. If I chose that tire, would the only issue be that the speedometer would read incorrectly? Can I in fact use that tire without screwing anything up?

I see it is about 3.3% off in size (circumference) - not an expert so maybe someone else can chime in. People try to keep it under 1 percent.

The other option is you can get a Blizzak or X-ICE instead of the Nokian in the OEM size.

I priced out winter tires at my dealership today.

20 inch OEM rims with tires $5500 + tax
19 inch oem rims with tires $4500 + tax

Installation still extra I believe, not sure what that charge is. I know they charge $250 to put rubber on rims.

WTF? I thought spending anything over $2.5K was expensive, but these tires are stupidly expensive.

I should have kept my Golf R for a few more years I think....

Would winter tires for a 3 series, like an M340I be considerably cheaper than X3 M40I winter tires?

If the rubber is a smaller size, then yes it likely would be.

$5500 is quiet a steep price to pay for 20s but then again it OEM. I believe I was a little over $3000 installed for a set of 20" Hakka R3's on a beauitful set of MSW OZ wheels.

You don't have to buy OEM wheels. Contact some local tire shops, they will set you up with alloy wheel + tire packages for under 2K even for 20 inch (and I am talking Canadian prices based on Toronto area, so it could be slightly more competitive than SK). If you are particular about the type/design of wheel, then it will be more, but still way less than above.

I'm not particular. I'll hit up Fountain Tire and Kal Tire to see what they have. I wasn't planning on going OEM, but the sticker price is just insane.
