New rack= vastly improved feel?
The dealer replaced my rack this week under warranty because it was making that knocking noise. And the steering is waaaay better, the loose feeling is gone, in sport mode the dead zone is gone and the weight is very close to the hydraulic setup in my e82. Anyone else experience this?

Nope all they did was replace the cam gear inside the adjuster. As the original one turned out a little and got loose as it was under tightened from the factory. The fix for that old rack was the simply turn the cam clock wise about 5 to 8 mm and steering came back to normal. If customer drove for extended period of time cam gear would wear because proper tension was not present. They then released the cam gear fix with the new style bushing to fix the wear issue those people were experiencing with some simply having replacement racks put in if under warranty.
