INEOS Styrolution’s composite StyLight® accelerates BMW M cars

Aesthetic carbon look
Cost-effective production

INEOS Styrolution, the global leader in styrenics, announced today that BMW M has selected the aesthetic composite StyLight® as the material of choice for a new generation of ergonomically optimised carbon shift paddles.

The selected material for the shift paddle application is INEOS Styrolution’s carbon composite StyLight Aesthetic S C245-1-060, backmoulded with PC/SAN GF30. It was specifically developed for automotive interior and exterior applications and a range of applications in the electronics as well as the sports and leisure industries.

In addition to its aesthetic appearance, StyLight offers a high chemical resistance. The StyLight solution meets all high BMW M standards.

A significant benefit of the solution is its cost-effectiveness. For example, StyLight can be used without coating (compared to a PC based composite) and no extra compression moulding step is required since the high surface appearance is achieved directly by the backmoulding step.

Martin Köhler, Business Development Manager Composites at INEOS Styrolution comments: “I am excited about the collaboration with BMW M. This is the kind of application we developed StyLight for.”

Shift paddles allow drivers of cars with automatic transmission to manually shift gears. While automatic transmissions are very advanced, some drivers still prefer to shift gears manually to anticipate bends in the road, to select a more responsive gear or taking advantage of the engine speed to slow the car, particularly in bad weather or slippery descents.

The carbon paddles on the M3/M4 feel very cheap - don't even know if it's real carbon. The look is great but the quality leaves something to be desired especially on a $90k+ car. Hopefully these have a better feel.

Imagine buying an automatic M car and the most exciting part of your day is flapping a little paddle back and forth

Disappointing

Lol a lot of us did, M5 😅. I'm ok with that as all my other cars were manual transmissions and since there is now a three year old in the rear doing everything she can to speak/sing over the radio every second of every minute, not having to worry about shifting gears at least gives me one less thing to worry about 😂

That's going to be a complete game-changer in regards to overall performance of the vehicle, just in the weight savings alone.

Would this be considered to be good practice... during slippery conditions?

Nice design. I'm sure the aftermarket will have a few options for paddles by the time the new M is released.

I have to agree, having driven a few of the new ZF8 equipped Ms, it’s just not the same. The 7sp DCT is just so much sharper and....violent, if you will. So much more satisfying!

Not driven a ZF8 yet but interested to see how much travel there is on these and stock paddles when selecting a gear compared to dct. Noticed on pdk its just a tiny but really solid feeling click, thought that worked really well.

Absolutely. What these will do for reaction and shift times will put any BMW with these paddles into super car territory.
