Comparing https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-mo...html#!/x3-m40i vs https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-mo...-features.html
Key differences are: Definitely bigger overall (length, width, height). Also 600lbs heavier. A bit more rear legroom and definitely more shoulder room front and rear. Offers double the cargo capacity. |

We test drove both before deciding on the X3. X5 felt huge in comparison (per my wife). I loved the X5's comfort and additional space, but the X3 is more in line with our old E53 X5 in size. We have a dog, no kids. With kiddos, especially older ones, I'd suggest the X5 (or a tractor trailer rig with them in the trailer) would be better.

When we bought my wife's X3 about six months later we considered the X5 and my wife felt both the new and older versions were just too big. I've also heard that the current X3 is larger than the original X5. Good luck!

Max posted great numbers, but I'd argue the subjective is just as important. I have two kids, and they immediately and consistently preferred the X3 to the X5 from a comfort perspective. One major item, the X3 rear seats recline, the X5's are fixed (due to the optional third row), which is a big comfort factor depending on the dimensions of the person sitting there. Second, most of the extra passenger "volume" comes from width and height, not so much in length (to my family anyway). That didn't give us much value as we've got tall folks, so length and seat adjustment mattered most.

There is a website that compares different car sizes please see link below. It even has a parking dimension section that shows how big your car is compared to the parking bay. I assume that the parking is less of an issue in the US. Unfortunately, the parking bays in the UK are comically small in some car parks
