Anyone interested in an E91 M3?
I was driving down the 405 in Irvine the other day and saw an E63 AMG Wagon flying down the fast lane. It looked interesting to say the least.
For BMW fans, would you purchase an E91 M3 if BMW made one?

At least marketing-wise I think it would be a bad move for BMW. They cannot sell coupes, convertibles, and sedans, it would be stupid to introduce a 4th variation. I dunno, it's like Jack Welch said, when a co. is raking in revenue and having tremendous growth, they can do anything they want. Eventually, when that growth slows, they have to come back to reality. It's like showing up for work one day a week and doing anything you want without any direction.

Well I'm not going to debate whether it's a great financial move for the company to make another variation, not really my interest.
I just wonder how popular "performance" wagons really are seeing as how I just saw a $90,000 one zooming down the highway at triple digit speeds.

In Europe an M5 Touring is available where the market can support the variant. Unfortuantely, the cost of certification of an M touring for North American (regardless of it being a 3 or 5) will kill any possibility of us seeing one here.

An E91 335 M/tii would be a wiser move. Or an E91 335d. Or an E91 320d. The E91 / touring configuration is a wonderful alternative to the SUV. In effect, it is a sedan with a little more functional room, but a touch more weight and chassis flex. That tradeoff is a good one, hence its high popularity in Europe.
Personally, I think the M should be limited to the most functional, in terms of performance, configuration. So yes, I am not in favor of the E91 M, nor especially the E93 M, and I find the idea of a X5 and X6 M appalling. Let the Cayenne or Jeep SRT8 fill that irrational niche.

So how do you guys think the E63 AMG Wagon was approved here in the states?
It seems like people like the idea of a performance wagon. Does Mercedes just have a larger base of customers than BMW does in the U.S?

Not that I'm from the US, but given that I have an E91 M-Sport Touring (320d) I'd like to have the option of a proper M Touring, but if I was in the market for a high performance Tourer I'd probably go with Audi.
The 335D Tourer (mate had one before going with an E92 335D) is a rapid piece of functional kit. Tune a 335D and they'll happily keep with a stock M3 when on the move. DMS tuned 335s as something else, so although the idea appeals to me I think it wouldn't sell that well given the other options open to Touring.

Audi has no plans to bring the S4 wagon over here. In fact, they don't even bring over the V6 A4 wagon anymore. Only the base model wagon comes now, just like BMW. Performance wagons are cool but they are just too small a niche to justify the cost of bringing them to the US.
As for an E91 M3 in Europe, its really the only performance car in its segment (or the segment above) that isn't available in a wagon. There's the E63, RS6 and M5 wagons. And then there's the C63 and RS4 wagons, but no M3. Too bad for Europeans that BMW already said they have no plans to build one. |

In a heartbeat, I love the wagon functionality but still want performance, no offense to anyone but I think any sedan based coupe is pointless, although the E92 is beautiful. Possibly BMW's best current design. If I could afford it I would gray market an E61 M5 over to the US.

The E63 is more on par with M5 touring right?
I don't think an M3 E91 would be attractive...
