How do I know which model code is for which BMW?
I know BMW’s official vernacular including model names like M3, M240i, etc. But in BWM circles online, owners often refer to them by another name such as F22, G80, and what have you.
My question is, how do you identify the latter? For example, if you click on the 1 Series 1addicts.com forums, you'll see F22. But if you click on the 2 Series 2addicts.com forums, you'll also see references to F22. I'm brand new to BMW so I might just need a crash course on BMW language. |

F22 is the BMW chassis code for the current 2 series coupe.

Internal code names started with E for Entwicklung (Development). Has progressed to F, G, etc.
Someone says they drive a 3-series, but the code name tells you the generation: E30, E36, E46, F30, G20 Furthermore, BMW has in the past sold different generation models in the same model year. For example, in the US, the 1999 323i *sedan* was an E46. The 1999 323is *coupe* was the old E36. The only 1-series sold in the US was E82 and E88. Other models (hatchback, etc) were sold in other markets. The F22 is the 2-series coupe. There is however a F20/F21 sold in other markets as a 1-series, both of which are hatchbacks. So that is why the forums appears slightly confusing. |

Mobile or web? On the Web, the 1-series drop down correctly shows only F20/F21.
There are multiple errors on my (Android) Bimmerpost app, it shows F20/F22 (should be F20/F21) under 1-series. It also shows only E82/E83 (what about E87, E88?). Under 2-series it only shows F22 (what about convertible F23?). The app is wrong. |
