Wanted to see if anyone has noticed their X3 turning off sport/sport plus randomly while driving after selecting sport/sport+?

This started happening to me a month ago and it’s been happening more often. I’m not getting any warnings/faults.

I will be setting up an appointment with the dealer this week hopefully to take a look.

Mine is coded to start in Sport mode and I've never experienced it switching to another mode without pushing the button.

If by randomly, you mean that it’s happening while you are driving, that’s not right.
It is normal to automatically reset to comfort mode after each time you turn the vehicle off.

@GS-X3 - sorry, it happens while driving. (Edited post to clarify)

Example: On my way home I stopped to get groceries. Got back in the car and turned on sport+ and dsc off before leaving parking lot. 5 mins later wondered why throttle response seemed slow and looked down to see that it was back in comfort mode.

That's not normal. Mine never switches away from sport/sport plus unless I press the comfort button or turn off the engine (I have not coded my car to start in sport). In the example you provided, you also turned DSC off. Experiment to see if the random turning off of sport/sport plus also occurs with DSC on. You want to provide your dealer with the narrowest range of circumstances under which the problem occurs. That will simplify diagnosing the problem.

I should also ask, did you do any kind of esoteric coding? For example, did you experiment with coding random options to see if changing them has an effect? If there was no effect, did you return them back to their stock values?

@Gugin - it has happened as well with dsc on.

I’ll have to see if I can catch it on camera. Other than that, I don’t notice any changes in driving behavior/performance.

OP youre not crazy this does happen. It happened to me many times. I dont know your exact experience. But for me it turns back from Sport+ to Comfort when I have been driving it redlining every gear every single time 1st-5th gear for a long time. I think it goes into safety mode thinking okay car should cool down a little.
But if youre just driving around town going 25mph and it does it then my theory doesnt make sense.

How are your tire pressures? Cruise control working okay, or is that also an issue?

I'd start with tires, as tire pressures can be a cause of Sport mode issues.

DSC is switched back on, when you engage cruise control.

How fast are you driving when redlining in 5th ? i would have thought red lining 1st - 5th for a long time would only ever happen on a track car?

5th gear redline is around 130mph. As I demonstrate below.

Stock limiter is at 131mph for 19".

160MPH with 6 miles fuel range left.........i wonder what you ave MPG is...guessing 15 ?? .oh and we did see the 55 MPH speed limit display.

Hey OP... did you every figure this out? I have noticed this a couple of times in my car... Once it flipped me out of sport back to comfort and the other out of adaptive back into comfort. I figure it is either software, the button itself, or the car is still in break in period and it could be reverting back to comfort after some slightly spirited driving? I really have no clue...

I am also curious if all of the people experiencing this issue have adaptive m suspension. We would have the different, less common, driving mode button.

When in Sport+, do you happen to set the cruise control? Setting cruise control automatically turns off Sport+ and set you back to Sport

That is completely normal, not sure why it happens though. It goes from From Sport or Eco to its default mode, I noticed when I set my default startup to Sport, it would automatically go into Sport and not Comfort!

Happened to me the other day. I was cruising through town in eco pro, & next thing I know, I'm back in comfort. I'm taking it in to the dealer next week for plates & a wash, so I'll ask them about it

This has been happening to me as well. Wasn't sure if was because (I) I was hitting the button accidentally, (ii) spilt coffee or something on the buttons or (iii) just going crazy lol. It happens to me all the time. Has anyone found a solution?

Happens to me as well. '20 M40i.

Only consistency I notice is that if I start car and immediately change drive setting from comfort (even before shifting out of P) it randomly/rarely will switch back to comfort. I've just started to back out of driveway and after a mile or so, I recheck my drive selection to make sure it hasn't changed.
