X3 M40i 21" snow recommendations

I am taking my X3 M40i with 21" performance run-flats to the mountains for a vacation. I'm not expecting inclement weather but I'd like to be prepared. I am looking for recommendations as to whether I need chains, how many I need, any specific brand you like. Thank you

Winter tires would be a good start...

No chains allowed by BMW on 20" and 21" wheels.

Was discussed before:

Don't take these in the snow they are awful. I did on the first snow fall while waiting for my winter set. It was a white knuckle ride to work.

Get a set of 19". My set of 18 (-1) does fit the M Sport brakes.

The 21" wheels really aren't good in ice or snowy conditions, they're too wide, I had a terrible journey home from work after a surpise snowfall, it was like trying to steer a hovercraft..

It’s the tires not the wheels. Depending on the amount of snow you intend to encounter, you can go mild or wild on the snow tires.
