Wallet at the ready.
Out comes the wallet, G01 30d first service due in March.
I seem to remember seeing a website that compares service costs of the BMW network in the UK, was I dreaming or is there such a site? Prior to the X3 I had for 8 years a 1 Series 118d that was absolutely superb, very cheap to run, comfortable and did pretty much everything I needed. In the end the old back started playing up so I went back to a big car. With hindsight I should have done it sooner, X3 G01 30d is bloody brilliant. Back to the topic. I used to supply my own oil at service times for the 1 series. If memory serves me correctly BMW wanted just over £100 for the oil and I would get 8 litres of the exact same oil for for just over £50. Anyone would think I'm tight . I'm going to hopefully do the same for the X3 if BMW allow it now. Does anyone in the UK supply their own oil and if so anyone at one of the dealers in Surrey? Cheers, Tony |

I’ve never supplied my own oil but have seen people say some dealers allow it & some refuse.
Look on the BMW service website for price comparisons, enter your car details & it’ll show prices for all kinds of services at dealers you select. |

I did it with Cooper Cobham, way back in 2012 on my 130i.
Bonus was that they used their own oil - when I rocked up and reminded them that I wanted them to use the oil in the boot, they just took it off the bill. I suspect more indicative of the incompetence of the specific dealer. I now steer clear of them anyway. Especially when they tried to diddle me when looking at an m2 they had in stock. Short sighted as bought one elsewhere the next day and just ordered a top spec x3 m40i through another dealer too. |

I had my first oil and micro filter service (M40i) this week and the cheapest I found relatively near to me was £368! It is expensive when you consider that my last car, a F31 340i was £220 with essentially the same engine.
Especially disappointed as I thought I’d get a few warranty items sorted, for example slight play in the drivers seat, and typically they said this is normal sir Cheers, Minty |

They don’t call it rip-off Britain for nothing...
Don’t you get any period of free maint? Once out of warranty - find a good Indy, screw the dealer. I’m in Canada, we get 4 years free routine maint (oil, filters, plugs)... same period as our normal warranty.... So for an out of warranty oil change/micro filter that’s just scandalous.... Although, our M40i is only a year old... at 2000km - I had my chosen independent garage change the oil without resetting the interval... I supplied the OEM filter (about 20 quid) and compatible oil... 30 quid.... Indy charged me less than 50 pounds labour. In Dec, with 10,000km, dealer did its first free oil change but I’d be surprised it it was more than 250 bucks Canadian if I had to pay.... FYI, an 2015 F25 28i was $170 CAD (about 100 pounds)... up from 90 pounds last year. My son still gets dealer oil changes as it’s still under the 7 year timing chain coverage. If your out-of-warranty, there’s no way I would be handing over that amount to a dealer for next to nothing... although access to the filter on an M40i is a bit more work than an F25 for instance. I’m not that familiar with the X3 M40i at this time .... but do routine maint myself out of warranty including brakes...Saves a ton of cash if you can do it.... failing that - take parts to a good Indy and pay labour only. Buy the micro filter (pollen filter) from them and tell them you’ll change it yourself if you’re reasonably handy with a torx screwdriver.
Should save you about £60 and takes a matter of minutes to do. |

Any dealer that’s charging £360 for an oil & filter service is taking liberties.

There’s no free maintenance anywhere, it’ll all just be built into the price of the car.

My Last 430D had a service pack, so on its three year anniversary it had its second service(all filters), with mot and brake fluid.
So MOT and brake fluid were not included ( although as brake fluid is a service requirement I believe is should be included in the service pack and was in all previous packs) It was going to cost me £130 on top of the service pack I had paid £499 For As it was 3 years old it was also getting free end of warranty check (last attempt by dealer to get any warranty work out of BMW) sceptic I know........ They then told me I would have to pay for a vehicle check/inspection (there is two checks that sound similar when a car gets serviced) as this was also required at an additional cost of I think £120. I asked what was included in this, basically all of it was covered in the service, the mot and the end of warranty check it was having anyway. They told me I had to pay for this check. I asked them to prove to me anything was being done in this check that was not going to checked anyway in the three other checks They could not and admitted nothing new was looked at. (printed lists out) They told me I still had to pay for this for the service history to be complete(on PCP, ie all service has to be up to date before return) SO I asked if they would provide a video of all 4 duplicated checks by four different people to prove to me that they would fundamentally do the same thing 4 times and I was getting what I paid for, they told me that was unrealistic/impractical. No shit sherlock.............after a standoff they offered to comp this check. Because they were not actually going do it as they knew the MOT/warranty etc check covered the same if not more........... How many people just pay.........all inclusive Service pack £499 So 1st service free, second service and extra £200 (brake fluid and inspection) so service pack £700 for two services not £499, ALL INCLUSIVE SERVICE PACK MY A*$E Oh my favourite part it "needed " new front discs and pads because of low milage corrosion to discs due to lock down (32k miles) . Cost £800. Odd considering it passed its MOT on the same visit............and 5 months later it was still fine. Looks to me as dealers are really looking to cash in on us, ( my new car is booked in for warranty work as the drivers door catch was not closing perfectly, they looked at and said it need whole new door lock/catch (car has done 600 miles), I adjusted it yesterday, took me 5 min and a T40 driver.............its fixed its a miracle..... losing the love. ( waiting for a month also for a new Harmon Kardon Amp) |

oil/filter £230, oil/filter and microfilter £330 (this is 1st service requirement), and you have to £30 for standard scope on top of these.so £360 for its 1st (second is £560) At £279 is yours a 2ltr or petrol ? |

I can only assume the price difference is due to the amount of BMW dealers in my local area, there’s loads of dealers in a 30 min drive radius of my house. |

My quote to from the BMW site is £279 for a 30d. My guess is that if I provide my own oil that would be at least £100 less.
Anyone know what Brand of oil BMW use in the UK and type? My manual says two types ate used BMW longlife-04 or longlife 12fe. Cheers, Tony |
