time-lapse overview of the S55 crank hub upgrade!
Hey yall! I wanted to share out my latest video made in coordination with the amazing Ivan Hernandez and BimTech PNW!
Knowing I am going to jump up power on my F87, I knew I wanted to upgrade my crank hub as a means of (relatively) cheap insurance, or at least peace of mind. I spoke with Ivan, enthusiast owner of Bimtech here in the PacNW. He agreed to let me film the whole experience, to highlight was a detailed piece of work this is, plus its neat to watch! I picked up the RK Autowerks 4pin billeted crank hub from Kies Motorsports, and rushed up to Ivan to get the job done. I am truly impressed with the quality of work he does, and if you have an S55 anywhere in the Pacific Northwest (and more) and want this done, I enthusiastically endorse Ivan! (plus.. the new tradition of bringing lunch when they work on your car.. he works his tail off, feed the man!)

OMFG. I didn't realize how they gut the car to do this! Plus this solution requires drilling the crank and two of the holes blew threw the edge (8:01).
So besides the labor, it also requires an oil change, coolant change, new valve cover gasket, new oil pan gasket and alignment! Hell no, stock is just fine for "me". Thanks for the video that was really informative but I didn't see how this is an improvement. Are the 4 screws that go into the holes what holds it in place? |

Haven't had a chance to watch your video yet but thanks for putting it together. Crank hub fix install is a long process. I've worked on all generations of BMWs from e30 to e90. This job is too big for me though and best left to the professionals. It's the only safe way to go if you plan to add power!

Huge improvement as it removes the chances of the crank hub spinning ever.. I can easily see me at 50% or more over stock power, so really cheap insurance at that point.

Figure start at $3k in your head and hopefully come out better than that.

That seems cheap. The part alone is $1299. You telling me you got 3 days of labor for only $1700 or roughly $70/hr?

No.. I am ballparking as it really depends on where you are and who does the labor. As a generic number, I would use $4k as closer myself.

Looking at pictures on their site, the holes in the crank can get pretty close to the edge. But, I suppose the load is along the radial edges of the holes so less of a risk of chipping the super thin wall of the crank and ingesting metal. https://pnwn54.com/s55-crank-hub-upgrade |

Keep in mind the whole come from a template provided by the crank hub source.. in my case, the holes are very tight to the inside rather than on the outside like the shot you shared.
