The track is wider, it's also stiffer and setup more towards rear drive bias than the X3, basically it's better at getting it "arse" out. It was designed to be more driver orientated than the X3. |

In actuality, xDrive in BMW X3/4/5/6 and X7 vehicles including M Performance models is 40:60 rear wheel biased and can vary torque to the axles every 0.1sec with a capability to send 100% of torque to one axle. ///M vehicles, such as the latest X5/6M, with M xDrive in 4WD Sport mode sends more power rearward (than the standard xDrive 40:60 split) and relaxes the stability control.

BMW says it has taken the M Sport suspension of the X4’s closely-related third-gen X3 stablemate
and then tweaked it to accommodate the coupe model’s lower ride height and sportier intent. Further, its centre-of-gravity is lower than the X3’s, it has a 30mm wider rear track than the old X4’s, there’s an M Sport differential on the trailing axle and lightweight construction techniques shave up to 50kg from the X4’s mass. DSC and DTC have a proper set up on the X4 which makes the car together with the above mentioned features more agile, faster and more dynamic than the X3, even with the same xDrive system. In addition the body of the X4 is stiffer than the body of the X3, which allows for an even sportier set up. The X4 also features Variable Sport steering as standard with a shorter ratio of 16.4:1 compared to the X3’s 17.8:1. |

As a very happy and satisfied owner of an X4, I agree entirely with this statement.

I have a 2018 X3 that I love. My lease is expiring in May and I don't want to get the same car again and the LCI won't be available to order yet, so I am contemplating getting the X4. On my test drive it seemed like it drove much stiffer than the X3 which I liked. It feels sportier. I will miss the SUV part of the X3 though.

lol I disagree but then looks are a very subjective thing. I went to order an X3 M40i and I came out having ordered an X4 M40i because I saw one next to the X3 and I just preferred how it looked and how it felt when driving "briskly" on the test drive.

One other note about performance and handling - you can order the M Sport differential on the X3. I did, but I'm still in the break-in period and have been driving like a grandma so I can't tell yet what difference it makes as compared to the standard diff. |

Latest gen of xDrive is more efficient and has lighter rear differential and a modified transfer case.
