BMW Electric Vehicle winter testing: 2016 F87 M2 featuring some unreleased goodies

BMW Electric Vehicle winter testing: 2016 F87 M2 featuring some unreleased goodies

Looks like BMW is using an early stage F87 M2 prototype as 'shell' for EV testing. Likely for future use in G42 2er or G87 M2 variants.

Points to note:
  • test site: Sweden - likely: Arjeplog (± 60 km south of the Arctic Circle);
  • F87 M2 model (2016-2017 - no LCI, Competition or CS) - Alpine White;
  • electric vehicle (battery master switch sticker on the boot + no exhaust);
  • no exhaust;
  • underbody extension (battery pack);
  • M-CCB (BMW M Carbon Ceramic Brakes on F87 M2: M2 CS only);
  • roll cage;
  • Recaro seats;
  • vented hood (hood louvers);
  • M Performance Parts CF ducktail boot/trunk (BMW part # 41 62 2 460 277);
  • front end without M2 air curtain 'fangs' (likely an early stage F87 M2 prototype);
  • 641M wheels - 'Dekorsilber' finish;
  • rear fenders protection film has 'yellowed' (= old test car).
Shout-out to BMWGirlFL for the heads-up.

Cold weather testing is an important phase of how well EVs fair in cold weather. Nice to see BMW (and others) invest enough time in cold weather testing.

BMW has some exciting high performance electric vehicles coming over the next few years. For example, prior rumors include a three motor, 1000hp setup for a G60-based "i5 M".

As Artemis indicated, this could be a mule for an electric G42 or G87. The former might be called something like "i2 M40" or "i2 M50" while the latter could be "i2 M". It's not clear yet whether we'll actually get just one of those or both.

When solid state batteries start coming out, it will be a game changer in that regard. Personally I would not buy an electric till they have that tech. It will make every current EV obsolete.

Toyota has over 1,000 patents involving solid state batteries and plans to deliver a prototype vehicle sometime in 2021. It makes sense to probably lease the current generation EV for 3 years.

The optimistic timelines you hear splashed about by the media should be treated with skepticism. Even if we are bullish and say 2025 for the sake of argument, if you buy an EV today, you'll get years of life out of it before the solid state battery equivalent is available.

So, sure, if you had no plans to buy an EV before 2025 anyway, the promises associated with that battery tech might make the decision feel even more comfortable. But anyone ruling out a potential EV purchase in the near term in hopes for breakthroughs right around the corner may want to reconsider.

All current new vehicles will be obsolete the moment it's replaced by a new generation whether it's ICE or EV. If you are always holding out waiting for the latest and greatest technology you will never get a new vehicle.

An EV G87 would be awesome. In fact, I would take the one shown in EV form because the F87 looks great as it is.

True that only BMW knows whether that prototype is full EV or a hybrid.

But IMHO it looks like it does feature EV tech: no exhaust (at least not visible) and underbody extensions. Furthermore, I guess that, also in Sweden, it's illegal to drive around with a fake safety sticker ("Battery Master Switch") and a fake battery master switch box/button on the trunk, misrepresenting the car, as that can potentially fool first responders and firemen in the event of an accident.

too bad that test car will never exist, would've loved a F2x electric daily driver. I'm not getting my hopes high for the new generations, BMW will surely not fail to disappoint

It's not an EV or PHEV High Voltage Warning label. That's an FIA Battery Master Switch Location Label for the supply isolation key.

The side exit exhaust ahead of the rear wheels are disguised but leave the discoloration evidence. Its a Motorsport chassis underneath.
