Careful! AFE + Scoops + Rain
I was making a 1.5 hour drive back home to visit my parents last night, and the rain was really coming down. The temps were hovering around the mid to low 40s, and I needed to fill up on gas just before getting to their house. I noticed I was getting a few miles/gallon lower than I usually do on the highway, but I just attributed that to the weather and temperature.
While filling up for gas, I decided to take a quick glance under the hood to satisfy my curiousity. To my bewilderment, there was water over the base of the first filter! That (vaccum?) line that crosses the snorkel exit was also wet as well. I couldn't see it, but only assumed some got onto the filter itself as well. Moral of the story is if you plan on driving in heavy rain with the above mods, you may want to take precautionary measures! |

You can't hydrolock unless you submerge your intake in water.
To the OP, what kind of scoops do you have? Just wondering because Swoop Scoops have little slit to let out any water before going into the snorkel.

Thanks for your experience.
I don't believe that it will contribute to a serious issue but it's good to keep an eye on it.

I always use to say that you didn't need to worry unless your filter was submerged, but around a month ago I was driving in my brother's car and it was pouring out. He has a CAI in his car that is down in the bumper and he went to give the car 1/3 throttle and the engine bogged as if the traction control cut all of the power. He tried to give it gas again with the same result. I took a look at his filter when we got to his house and it was simply damp. It wasn't submerged, just simply got some water on it, which isn't the end of the world, but since the power felt like it was being cut I took the rest of the intake pipe off and there was a little pool of water sitting in the end of his throttle body. To make a long story short, I realized that the 5whp difference really isn't worth it if you drive in any type of heavy rain, and this is coming from someone who has had many CAI's on a few different cars over the years. My brother didn't drive through any standing water, it was just raining out so take what you would like from this. Also, I realize that his car is NA so the water can be ingested much easier than on a turbo car with 45 feet of charge pipe, but I just figured I would share my experience anyway.

^^seriously, so we should get another car for when it rains, is that right?? Your driving a BMW, I wonder what you'd do if you were driving a Ferrari or a Lambo.... prob. wouldnt drive it, just leave it in the garage and every once in a while, masturbate to its supple leather seats

If I had the money to have a weekend car I can assure you that the 335 wouldn't be it. I would probably use a 335 as a daily driver and something like a F430 Scuderia, Porsche GT3 RS, etc. as the weekend car. |

The 335i isn't an antique Ferrari, it is a car that is meant to be driven in the wind, rain, sleet, snow, sun, hot, cold, etc.

Is there a drain hole in the bottom of the aFe heat shield pan? If not, then that might not be a bad idea to consider.

I have the Swoop Scoops. I know the slits should help, but I think with the amount of air coming through, there is some water that's going to come with it. I am thinking in heavy rain in the future, I could just a flap or something on the snorkel to prevent water from spraying on the filters.

BMW = Daily driver, its not a garage queen or exotic....so it shouldnt be (or need to be) treated like one.

I just had a flash back reading this post....
Things not to do with beer + rental car + huge puddle by the powerlines. Dont wory, we're pulling it out of the puddle by the radiator support hahaha. PUDDLE - 1 CAR - 0 Our friend called up the rental place and told them he hit a little puddle and the "damn thing stopped working". (In actuality one of the connecting rods sh*t the bed). They actually apolgized and gave us a new 300m. Later that evening the 300m was air born in downtown Atlanta with 7 people in it. Ah, the younger stupider days. |
