Man, CarPlay is buggy (is it just me?)

I’ve had the car 3 weeks today, and I’m not a fan of the CarPlay setup in this car. If I leave my phone in the wireless charger, after a while it get super hot and there’s a big delay between when I want to do something like change a song to when it actually happens. Also the charger stinks. It charged my phone 3% in an hour. Think I may just use a cable to charge, but then I’m wondering if that will slow the phone even more. Anyone else have these issues?

I have had instances where the phone got warm, but nothing alarming for me.

I too sometimes get a delay when changing songs. Mostly what I see happen is the song auto plays into the next track but the information still retains the previous track as what's playing.

My charging doesn't seem that slow, is your screen on while you're charging it in the tray? Seems unusually slow charging if only 3% after that timeframe, I guess it depends on whether you're in a good cell signal spot and whether you're using GPS or something similar.

Weird. Thanks for the feedback. My screen wasn’t on, and was just using it for music, so no navigation. I’ll have to try my wife’s phone. Maybe it’s my phone then.

The wireless charger is way more complex than simple Qi charging. It contains an antenna and repeater which connects the phone to the roof antenna. In the several BMWs (+ Supra) that I've had with this feature, all of them drastically overheat the iphone. I believe this is related to handoffs between the phone itself and the repeater unit; whatever is happening, it's constant and uses enough power to overheat (at least iPhones) rather quickly.

IMHO, this is a huge bug and renders these chargers worse than useless. They actively overheat your phone, leading to throttled performance and (worse) shortened battery life. BMW clearly needs to fix or disable this. I no longer use them for wireless charging at all.

Bonus PS for laughs: buried in the manual is a requirement to register these repeaters with FCC (in the USA), along with a web link. Prior to iDrive 7.0, the serial and model numbers required to do this registration weren't listed anywhere. At least in iDrive 7.0 the "About" app lists this info for the repeater, along with dozens of other bits of info.

Thanks for the additional information. I wonder if this happens to people’s Android phones. Could be an Apple problem, as opposed to BMW.

I'm totally with you at least on the Android auto side. It really kills my phone fast and like you the wireless charging overheats it when using AA. On top of that Spotify sometimes starts stuttering. While I like google maps and would love WhatsApp on the screen I can't get over all the issues...it's really disappointing.

Thanks for the confirmation on AA. It is kinda frustrating. I’ll probably just use a cable in the center console to charge, though it kinda defeats the wireless concept.

Same issue here, always use the usb cable for charging iPhone, much faster and no lag on iPhone and AA. Very annoying

I think Car Play works pretty well for me. I tried the wireless charging when I first got my car, but like you realized, it does heat up your phone. So I just use a cable and plug into the USB for charging while I use the wireless Car Play.

Thanks. I'm gonna try this route. Stinks about the wireless charger since it is convenient.
