Waze on Heads up Display
Hi guys, just about to pick up the x5 M50i, and wondering using the Waze, I have heard it now shows on the HUD, does that include warnings for certain businesses, that have red and blue lights?

I hadn't even tried Waze in my new X5, will try it later.
I've moved to TomTom as Waze is fiddly/crap I've found but will give it a go. |

It does show up on HUD with the latest 11/2020 update. However it's pretty minimal. You just get an arrow pointing in the direction you need to go/turn as well as the street name. No elaborate maps like with BMW navigation and definitely no warnings. But definitely better than nothing. I'm speaking from using it through Android Auto. Not sure if Apple Carplay does it differently.

With iPhone, the HUD works well with Apple Maps, but not Waze. The Apple Maps are really good these days, but I still prefer Waze for the crowdsourcing features, like getting you around traffic jams and alerting you to police. I end up just using Waze on the center console.

I dont understand why BMW doesn't just switch to a DLP projector for the HUD. That doesn't require polarization and you can view it through any type of sunglass

Here is what works best for me. (I am new to BMW, there might be better options).
I use iDrive navigation with sound switched off. This has the benefit of showing map/directions in the HUD, which otherwise stays unused with this tiny speed indicator. I also have often used destination on 1-8 buttons. Then I have Apple Shortcuts to start Waze when the iPhone connects to CarPlay. Waze is set to Sound On, so I still get police/accident alerts. |

I don't think there is much demands for DLP projection; its market likely very small, and cost would be much higher. OTOH, the screen used for current HUD would get cheaper every year, and they can use larger and brighter screen with each successive generation.

I *believe* Lincoln uses a DLP projector for their HUD, and touts the fact that you can wear any kind of sunglasses with it and it'll still work. When we're spending around 100k for a vehicle, its not much to ask for manufacturers not to cheap out on this stuff. If I wanted savings, I'd drive a corolla.

Yes. This is what I do on road trips. Waze gives me the alerts but BMW nav gives directions. All you have to do is start Waze in car play and then go to bmw maps to plot your course.
