Warning for those of you buying summer tires now!

Please do not buy the suv version of the Michelin ps4s tires. Buy the bmw star version.
Here are the reasons.

-It's not bmw star rated. Which means bmw did not test it with your car. This may not matter much but the car was designed for the ps4s models in mind.

-The suv versions are heavier, they add about 12lbs versus the none suv version which translates to almost 50lbs when you figure it's rotating.

-Here is the biggest issue. Their tread wear rating is only 220!!! That is HORRIBLE! The Conti 6 tires are rated for 240, which translates to only about 6k miles on your tires! That means the suv version is even worse! The regular ps4s models have a treadwear rating of 300. Much much more reasonable.

Pretty sure it's not apples to apples comparison between brands as it relates to tread wear rating. You need to compare tread wear within a brand not conti vs mich.

https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...%20challenging.

And for the record, I have over 8k on my contis so 6k is quite a bit off. My 8k includes multiple drag strip days, as well as a track day where I torched my front brakes.

Just my opinion and experience.

You're joking right? I'll entertain this. Show me your math in converting tire tread wear to miles... lol

This is interesting,

My car came with the Michelin PS4s from factory back in October 2019 & there's no doubt about it they are a great tyre.

Yes they are star bmw approved tyres but you can't say they were pacifically designed for the X3M & X4M as why do some come with Continentals fitted & now a days they all seem to be leaving the factory with Continentals. The star simply mean that BMW have approved said tyre.

Now before putting tyres on my new BC Forged wheels I had thought about putting the PS4S on them as well but after doing my research I thought I'd try the PS4 SUV tyres, as all the reviews I'd read, videos I'd watched etc raved about them & hey even Michelin's promo video shows the SUV variant fitted to a BMW X3 & a few Manufacturers have added these tyres to their approved list(all be it not BMW as yet)

I've had the new wheels & tyres fitted for over a week now & they feel awesome, definitely way more grip in the dry & wet conditions here in the UK & they ride more comfortable on our roads also, noise level is on a par with the standard also.

The thing I instantly noticed was that when turning into a tight junction or when pulling off with any lock on the steering at all with the PS4S tyres tended to scrabble for grip & spin a little & there is none of this with the SUV variant.

As for wear I suppose we'll need to wait & see, I've done 8.5K miles in 18months on my OEM wheels & PS4S and they are only now starting to show some wear but will be good for at least another 4-5k miles.

Weight wise for myself & out of interest I got my local tyre place to weighed my OEM wheels & tyres & my BC Forged wheels & tyres & there was nothing in it for me to be worried about & if anything the new setup was ever do slightly lighter, with the new setup I'm running same 9.5 wide with 255 tyre size on the front & my rears are 11 wide with 295 tyre.

Hope this all make sense to you all, have a good day.👌🏼

I guess I don't understand that if a star rated tire exists, why wouldn't you go that direction?

Note the Star rating can mean a significantly different tire than the standard version. I was told tread patterns, compounds, etc may be changed to meet the vehicle spec. It doesn't mean an approved tire, it means one that meets a specific spec that BMW asked for, often for quietness, wet handling characteristics, etc. I would choose the star version over standard if available but there's nothing "wrong" with the standard version. PS: This information was heard from Michelin engineers and spokespersons across several BMW events.

Regarding the MP4 SUV tire, I can't tell you the specific differences over the standard MP4S but with such a different tread rating, there must be a significant difference (but possibly just higher wear given heavier vehicles).
PS: I'll see if I can find a Michelin person at my next event!

PPS: Tire Rack seems to be the best publicly available resource. What do they say?

While you can't really compare teadwear ratings across brands. Going from 300 down to 220 is a huge drop. Which means you WILL get less miles out of the suv version. So then why would you get the suv version?

I do actually

I would understand if the MS4S wasn't the gold standard tire and an upgrade was desired. But it's the superior tire, comes OEM on the vehicle with a star rating, and has significantly better specs than alternatives. The Pilot Sport SUV was clearly meant for full size SUVs, not something the size of an X3M, which is more closely matched to a sedan in weight.

Yea exactly. I don't understand why you would want or defend the suv tire....

Not defending the SUV tire, I was simply putting out the opinion that just because the vehicle manufacture recommends something doesn't mean it is a "Must Buy". There are almost always other options available and some times those options are just as good if not even better.

I have stated several times, I have the 20" wheels, so the PS4S is not even available for mine. Mine came with Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) which is also Star BMW recommended.
I can pretty much tell you now that Pirelli P Zero tires will not be the replacement tire that goes on my SUV when the originals wear out.
I never run Shell fuel.
After the free maintenance is over, I will not use BMW oil or filters.
Why you ask, because others are just as good if not better.
Just my 2 cents.

Well for oil, it's very hard to find real reviews of different oils. Almost every review is bought. Not saying to buy the oem stuff, just that it's impossible to know what's really good out there.

For gas, the quality of gas varies wildly based on your location and station. My dad worked for 20 years at a massive gasoline company. He was the manager of a refinery. Their testing showed it was a total crap shoot what you got. For example, in my area, both shell stations make my car sputter and run terribly. But the Luke oil and bjs gas station are fine. So yea, I wouldn't run exclusively shell.

Keep in mind that treadwear ratings are not consistent across brands! Ratings are based on a small amount of usage and lifespans are calculated based on this small use. Ratings can be a little helpful when comparing, say, one model Michelin with another Michelin, but really aren't much use between maybe a Michelin and Pirelli tire. Besides, as a general rule, the better the traction, the shorter the lifespan.

Edit. Just read someone already pointed out that treadwear ratings are not consistent...oh well

I attended the MX1 BMW event today and talked to a Michelin rep. Unfortunately he could not answer the question on the real differences between the MP4S and the MP4 SUV tires, or why the later is a much lower wear rating. He was just a front guy and said Michelin isn't allowing the real engineers out of the office since Covid

It is a true mystery why the MP4S is available in 21's but only the MP4 SUV fits the 20s, unless they figure us non-comp guys don't want the max performance and intend to use the car as an SUV. I do wonder if the wear rating is just to reduce the warranty based on expected heavier loads, yet the actual life would be the same....

Meh I bought whatever Pilot Sport 4S is 265/40/21 and the Benz version that is 295/35/21. If you're referring to the Michelin Pilot 4 SUV, that is an entirely different tire altogether and there is no "star" version of that tire.

Yes, I run 93 unless I am on a trip and unable to find it then I run 91.

And FYSA, 91 or higher octane is not a "recommendation" from BMW, it is a requirement for proper engine function.

BMW recommending a 'BRAND' of tire or fuel is not a requirement for proper vehicle/engine function.
