Update: The man who died Thursday when a car fell on him while he was allegedly attempting to steal its catalytic converter was identified as a 29-year-old Kent Raymond Williams of Vancouver, The Columbian reports. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office, which released the ID, determined that Williams died of traumatic asphyxia from compression of the torso.

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A man was killed Thursday morning in east Vancouver while he was apparently attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a car.

Four Seasons Auto Repair and Tire Center owner Faazan Ahmed said the man was seen on surveillance video around 2 a.m. jacking up a silver Mercedes parked in the shop’s parking lot. The jack tipped over and the car fell, crushing him.

The man’s body wasn’t discovered until after 7 a.m., when Ahmed said someone next door to his shop noticed the man under a car.

The Vancouver Police Department was dispatched at 7:41 a.m. and the fire department and ambulance responded at 7:44 a.m., according to emergency dispatch logs. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The department’s major crimes unit is investigating the death, according to police, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Ahmed said his neighbor has had several catalytic converters stolen from his lot recently. The neighbor was hoping to catch the suspect in the act Thursday morning, Ahmed said, and approached the man under the car. But he noticed he wasn’t moving.

Ahmed has heard there’s been an increase in catalytic converter thefts and said, “It’s not worth a life.”

People often steal catalytic converters because of the precious metals inside. According to Ahmed, the man had three or four of the parts in his car already.

A bill in the Oregon Legislature, SB 803, hopes to curb the rampant theft of catalytic converters in Oregon by prohibiting scrap metal businesses from purchasing or receiving most catalytic converters.

Anytime i hear about people steeling from someone else or damaging a car to take something, I always get pissed. Its just infuriating that people cant just work hard and buy their own shit. Instead some people choose to take oher peoples hard earned stuff. Guess the world now has one less asshole.

The rightful death in this instance is going to lead to a payout to the Darwin Award Winner's family. His parents will probably file a wrongful death suit against the shop because they left the car outside. They will sue the jack company because the jack failed to hold up the car. And lastly they'll sue the car manufacturer because the cat shouldn't be made to be able to be removed so easily.

Let's relax. While I believe the guy should've faced punishment, applauding his death is not cool. He was stealing catalytic converters (something a lot of us on this forum remove anyway), not murdering a family.
